Gennadiy Golovkin has been a thorn in the side of Canelo Alvarez for about half a decade now.

During the close years in 2017 and 2018, both Golovkin and Alvarez waged a back-and-forth fight in the ring. Although Alvarez was split in their first bout and won a decisive majority in their sequel, Golovkin vehemently protested that the sport of boxing was painfully wrong.

Since his first career defeat to his longtime rival, Alvarez has won multiple championships. In addition to unifying the middleweight titles with Daniel Jacobs in 2019, Alvarez won the WBO light heavyweight belt against Sergey Kovalev, as well as every world title at 168 pounds.

With more gold than he can take, Alvarez is aiming for another light heavyweight title, as well as a third fight with Golovkin. The pound-for-pound star from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, recently signed a triple contract with promoter Eddie Hearn, which will see him take on WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol .

Provided everything goes according to plan, Alvarez will move on to the second battle of his new deal, the one with Golovkin.

For the most part, Alvarez sat in silence as Golovkin publicly chastised him, going as far as to say that not only was Alvarez “delusional” but he had beaten the Mexican star on both occasions. Now, with their contest within reach, Alvarez plans to drive a violent nail into Golovkin’s coffin.

“Yes, that’s how I feel,” Alvarez said when asked if he would beat Golovkin this time on Fight Hub TV.

Before Alvarez gets too confusing, there are several steps that must be taken first. First and foremost, Alvarez had to run business against Bivol and successfully end his nearly five-year title reign. Also, Golovkin will need to get past the WBA middleweight champion, Ryota Murata. The two will play tango on April 9, in Murata’s hometown of Japan.

For now, Alvarez is not trying to get ahead of himself. At this point, he would simply put Golovkin on the afterburner and turn his full attention to a man he considers the best in the light weight class.

“First thing, I need to win this match but that’s how I feel.”
