He may not be the flashiest of Canelo Alvarez’s rivals, but Caleb Plant is certainly a legitimate contender as he and Canelo battle for the undisputed super-middleweight world championship. . Truth be told, Plant calmed himself well during the match. However, Canelo is a man in his prime, one who has had a spectacular seven, three-year winning streak. The redhead star is, to put it simply, undeniably. A brutal fish attack in the eleventh round resulted in Plant being knocked down and disqualified. That was in November of last year.
Suffice to say, a lot has changed since that time. Plant and his wife Jordan welcomed a baby girl last summer. Plant also has a comeback match on October 15 when the 30-year-old will face former tournament champion from Anthony Dirrell. However, things also changed for Canelo. After defeating Plant in November, he lost for the first time since 2013 when he challenged Dmitry Bivol to Bivol’s WBA lightweight title the following May. Then, just last week, Canelo was criticized in several circles for failing to stop veteran rival Gennady Golovkin in their third match.
Now, as his return date draws closer, Plant has been asked if he wants to face Canelo a second time. “It wasn’t my best camp going into that war,” he told FightHype in last year’s battle with Canelo, “but despite that that’s not why I lost. I lost because I was caught with a great shot and I was stopped. However, Plant made it clear in the interview that he wants to see Canelo again in the ring. “I want to fight Canelo again,” said the 21-1 boxer. “If I had to pick every last super middleweight in the league to get there, that’s what I would do.”
While fans may not be in favor of the second Canelo-Plant fight, the Tennessee native remains one of the top super-middleweights in the world. Although the tough fight against David Benavidez is seen as a serious one for Canelo, the famous Canelo could be headed for a rematch with Bivol his next match. In addition, Canelo may also need hand surgery before returning to the ring. That means he probably won’t be fighting at super-middleweight for a while. And it seems Plant a is willing to be patient, at least for now.
