BYD sales hit record in August despite slowing Chinese EV market overall

BEIJING — China’s electric vehicle giant BYD sold a record number of passenger vehicles in August, with hybrid sales growing faster than battery-electric vehicle sales.

The company said August sales up 30% year-on-year to 370,854 passenger cars.

Sales of its battery-powered vehicles rose nearly 12%, while sales of hybrid vehicles jumped 48%, accounting for nearly two-thirds of BYD vehicles sold last month.

In contrast, some new energy vehicle startups saw deliveries fall last month.

Automatic Libest known for its range-extending vehicles, has reported 48,122 deliveries in August, down from a record 51,000 in July.

If BYD maintains its average monthly overseas sales pace through December, the company will sell nearly 400,000 vehicles outside China this year, according to CNBC calculations.

Xiaomi said it delivered more than 10,000 vehicles in August for the third consecutive month. In mid-July, CEO Lei Jun said the company aimed to deliver 100,000 SU7 electric cars by the end of November.

That means Xiaomi needs to deliver an average of at least 16,000 vehicles per month from August to November, according to CNBC calculations based on reported data.

The smartphone company started mass shipping the SU7 in April at a price of around $4,000 cheaper than Tesla’s Model 3.
