Brock Purdy no need to wait until the end of the 2024 NFL Draft to find out his future, like he did in 2022 when San Francisco 49ers making him the final overall pick. But the 49ers starting quarterback admitted this week that he still watches nervously as trade rumors swirl around his top two wide receivers, Deebo Samuel And Brandon Aiyuk.
“Obviously you’re excited to get the guys you’re drafting, but at the same time, it’s like, ‘Damn, man. We could have some kind of trade thing going on and whatever. whatever,'” Purdy told reporters after the 49ers’ offseason practice on Wednesday.
However, the draft came and went while both Samuel and Aiyuk were still on the team. Samuel is entering the second year of a 3-year contract extension worth up to $73.5 million that he signed before the 2022 season. Meanwhile, Aiyuk is looking to extend his own contract when he steps down. in the final year of his rookie contract.
Samuel is participating in the 49ers’ off-season team activities (OTAs) with Purdy; Aiyuk does not. Attendance is voluntary, not mandatory, so Aiyuk will not face any penalties for his absence. Purdy made it clear that he placed a high priority on bringing Aiyuk back on a new contract in order to keep the 49ers’ talented offensive core together.
“I think it’s extremely important,” Purdy said. “He’s a jock. Love for him. Love BA as a person.”
But Purdy also acknowledged those decisions belong to general manager John Lynch, who also drafted another wide receiver, the former of Aiyuk. Arizona State teammate Ricky Pearlin the first round of last month’s draft.
“All of that was out of my control,” Purdy said. “I’m showing up every day trying to be better with the new guys and the guys that are here and that’s the way it is. But hopefully it’ll get resolved soon.”
