Through animal rescue, we have learned that where there are bad guys, there are heroes. This contrast was clearly demonstrated when four boys from a seven-mile stretch of Detroit took extraordinary action to save a dog in dire need. Brothers Kenny, Kenneth, and Kevin Dancy, along with their friend Andrew Daniels, were helping a local woman move when they came across a heartbreaking scene. They found an abandoned dog tied behind a house with rubber bands. The dog was severely malnourished and shivering from the cold. Realizing the urgency, the boys knew they had to help immediately.
The heroic boys wrapped the dog in a winter coat to keep it warm, freed it from its bonds, and brought it home to provide food and water. They decided to name it Sparkle.
While walking Sparkle around the neighborhood, the boys came across members of Detroit Pit Crew Dog Rescue. They shared Sparkle’s story with the rescue team, who suspected she might also have mange. The organization quickly got her medical attention and later posted the story on Facebook, calling the boys “heroes” for their actions.
“You can tell they really love this dog,” said Theresa Sumpter, the organization’s founder. WDIV“They were protective of the dog and wanted to make sure it went to a good place.” After Sparkle was checked out at the shelter, they confirmed that she did not have mange, allowing her to be quickly adopted.
Pet Tales Rescue, a partner organization, managed the process and found a foster mom who could provide Sparkle with the love and care she deserved.

Authorities have charged a New Jersey man with multiple counts of animal cruelty after discovering several dogs in his care were living in dangerous and violent conditions. Under current law, there is nothing to prevent the man from owning, possessing, or caring for other animals in the future.
The story doesn’t end there. The four boys, who received widespread recognition for their kindness, went on to rescue two more dogs in their neighborhood. With the help of Detroit Pit Crew Dog Rescue, they were able to get the dogs off the streets and into veterinary care. Aren’t these boys amazing?!
