After decades of selling state-of-the-art driving machines, BMW car is expanding its résumé by offering the ultimate gaming machine. The company announced it will offer the in-car gaming platform AirConsole developed by Switzerland-based N-Dream on some of its cars starting in 2023.
BMW explains that the AirConsole platform is well suited to the Curved Displays available in models such as iX crossover. While the details are still few and far between, it seems that playing a game on your BMW won’t require an investment in hardware modifications; games are projected to cars through the air, run through the infotainment system, and are designed to be played with a smartphone as a controller.
There’s no word on what title drivers and their passengers will be able to play in a BMW. AirConsole lists more than 180 games on its website including classics like checkers, Mario Kartracing-like game and a casino simulator called Drunk Casino. We don’t know which BMWs will be compatible with the in-car game, but the company says Automatic log that New 7 Series will be one of the first cars to adopt this technology.
“AirConsole gaming that requires computing power is only met with a hardware update of the head device. This update is first available in the new 7 Series and will be rolled out to other models starting in [in 2023]”, a BMW spokesman confirmed to Automatic log.
Looking beyond the big 7, it’s reasonable to assume that this technology will be available on BMW’s Electric Car. Nothing is official, but you’ll most likely want to spend some time playing the game while you’re waiting i3 charge more than when you are in Laguna Seca an M3.
BMW will launch the in-car game in 2023. Pricing information and additional details will be announced in the coming months.
