The 2022 BMW Championship has big boots to fill after a dramatic end to the St.Jude Championship. With Will Zalatoris breaking through in his first win at TPC Southwind, there’s a new name topping the FedEx Cup rankings for the first time in 20 weeks.

Zalatoris has the edge over world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler as the two jostle for spot ahead of the Tour Championship at East Lake. One player who will not be on the field is FedEx Cup number 3 Cameron Smith. The reigning Open champion withdrew from the BMW Championship on Monday due to hip discomfort but is expected to return for the post-season finale.

While the top of the leaderboard offers many attractions, just reaching the Tour Championship is an achievement in its own right. 2022 BMW Championship field, odds

• Rory McIlroy (10-1): One of the bigger surprises from the St.Jude Championship was McIlroy’s absence over the weekend. Missing his first shot since the Texas Open a week before the Masters, the Northern Irishman should reserve for a comeback performance. His iron game was actually quite successful at TPC Southwind as he won nearly two strokes on approach, but late-stage woes were his ultimate undo. There’s only one annual stop on the PGA Tour, which boasts a similar scorecard to Wilmington CC – the Hollow Clutch Club, where McIlroy has won it three times before.
• Jon Rahm (12-1): The 2020 BMW Championship winner is slowly but surely in terms of form. Ending the draw in fifth place at the St. Jude, Rahm had his best iron show since the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March. Combine this advancement in approach play with his presence and improvements in the short game discipline, and the Spaniard will be in action on Sunday.
• Will Zalatoris (14-1)
• Patrick Cantlay (14-1): The defending champions are very close to finding them all. There are no solo wins to his name this season – he won the Zurich Classic alongside Xander Schauffele – the reigning PGA Tour Player of the Year has scored 3 runner-ups and 6 top finishes 10. He took a step back at the St. Jude with a T57 record, but on a court with a large putting surface, if he can use his flat club in the same way he did last year at Caves Valley, he will change his luck and go in Tour Championship with a realistic chance to win a second consecutive FedEx Cup title.
• Scottie Scheffler (14-1): For the first time in a long time, the name Scheffler did not occupy the top position on the FedEx Cup rankings. Only 124 points behind Zalatoris, the Masters champion will have a chance to reclaim the No. 1 spot ahead of the Tour Championship. To do so, Scheffler will need to be much better on greens. Expressing frustration at TPC Southwind, the Texan has now lost club numbers in seven of his last nine tournaments, including four in a row. The good news for Scheffler is that during this time span, the two times he’s been better than the court with a flat stick were a play-off loss at the Charles Schwab Challenge and a runner-up finish at the US Open.
• Justin Thomas (January 14)
• Tony Finau (January 14): Kyle Porter wrote about Finau .’s quest for three consecutive wins and the rare company he would join if he pulled out of TPC Southwind. Finally ending T5, there’s not much to dislike when it comes to the four-time PGA Tour winner and his chances this week. Stepping onto a long golf course, where there are so many birds, it’s hard to see past his name on the scale.
• Matt Fitzpatrick (16-1)
• Xander Schauffele (18-1): The Olympic gold medalist has three wins this season, but let’s not forget what Schauffele’s bread and butter used to be: events that don’t need to be cut. With victories at the Olympic Games, the Tournament of Champions, the WGC-HSBC Champion and the Tournament Championship, Schauffele acquitted herself with relative ease as the field was shortened. He didn’t get the best start with the T57 at the St. Jude, but he’s still sixth in the FedEx Cup standings. Given his relationship with East Lake, Schauffele will be just within reach to make it to the Tour Championship.
