BMW 7 Series EV officially named i7, appears in camouflage photo

BMW car is in the final stages of developing the next addition to its growing range Electric Car with a 7 Series partner. Called i7, luxury sedan will be positioned at the forefront of the Munich-based company’s i sub-brand in terms of technology, comfort and price as it hits showrooms.

It’s important to note that the i7 will not replace the internal combustion 7 Series. It will simply be marketed as an electric alternative to the big sedan’s successor, like the i4 To be 4 Series Gran Coupeof the battery-powered sidekick. Powertrain aside, both cars will be closely related under sheet metal and BMW notes that the suspension, steering and brake system developed with the next 7 in my mind. This design approach is part of the automaker’s clever effort to build most of its electric and piston-powered vehicles on common platforms to save costs.

Photos released by BMW show a pre-production prototype being worked through its steps in the postcard-like countryside on the outskirts of Arjeplog, a town located a few miles from the Arctic Circle in Sweden . While the camouflage hides most of the sedan’s design details, we can say that it still looks more or less like a 7 Series; It especially has a long roof and a short trunk. Up front, we see the outline of a relatively large kidney grille and horizontal headlights, but we’ll need to wait until the camouflage emerges to get a better look at the i7.

The specs are still featured too – metaphorically speaking, this time. We know that the i7 is all-electric and some of its powertrain components (including the battery packaging, electronics and charging technology) come from Recently launched iX. Our crystal ball indicates that power comes from a pair of electric motors that draw power from a relatively large battery mounted under the floor.

BMW will announce more information about the i7 in the coming months. As for the venerable 7 Series, it returns to the seventh generation with a wider range of powertrains than ever before. Buyer will reported asked to choose between a gasoline- and diesel-burning engine (though the latter certainly won’t be sold in the US), at least one dip into the mixture and a hydrogen power system. It seems to have quite a bold interior, possibly inspired by iX.
