Top Predictions for the 2024 BMW Championship Golf Tournament
One surprise: McIlroy, a four-time major champion and one of the top favorites, didn’t crack the top five this week. McIlroy struggled at the FedEx St. Jude Championship last week, finishing T-68, which dropped him to fifth in the FedEx Cup standings. Combined with his failure to qualify for the Open Championship, his mistakes in the final round of the U.S. Open could haunt McIlroy well into the summer.
McIlroy has won just one of his previous 13 BMW Championship appearances, in 2012. He has had three top-five finishes in his last eight BMW Championships, but has not finished in the top three since that 2012 win. Driving distance has never been an issue for McIlroy, and he ranks second in driving distance this year, but he ranks just 83rd in driving accuracy. Putting has been his biggest issue this year, as he ranks outside the top 40 in total putts and putting average while ranking 70th in strokes gained: putts. McIlroy has always been a popular bet due to his name appeal and the model failing to predict his value at current prices.
The model also took into account Schauffele’s finishing position. The Southern California native is currently No. 2 in the world thanks to a strong second half of the season. He won his first major at the PGA Championship in May and added another major at the Open Championship. In total, he has 13 top-10s in 2024.
Schauffele was poised to pull off a stunning comeback win last weekend at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, but ended up finishing second to Matsuyama. He entered the BMW Championship ranked second on the PGA Tour in strokes gained (2.235), scoring average (68.44) and birdie average (4.35), while ranking first overall in greens (70.91%).
