Bloomberg: Wind turbine collapse could increase insurance premiums

Wind turbines taller than the Statue of Liberty are about to fall

On a sunny day last June, Mike Willey was feeding his cattle when he received a call from the local sheriff’s dispatcher. A motorist reported that one of the giant turbines at a nearby wind farm had collapsed severely. Willey, director of the volunteer fire department in Ames, 90 miles northwest of Oklahoma City, began surveying the scene.

These cases are part of recent wind turbine failures across the US and Europe, ranging from failure of key components to total collapse. Some industry veterans say they are occurring more frequently, even if events occur in only a small fraction of installed machines. The problems have added hundreds of millions of dollars in costs for the three largest Western turbine manufacturers, GE, Vestas Wind Systems and Siemens Energy’s Siemens Gamesa unit; and they can lead to more expensive insurance policies—a potential obstacle to efforts to abandon fossil fuels and combat climate change.

The race to add ever-larger turbine production lines is seen by industry insiders as the main culprit. Fraser McLachlan, chief executive officer of GCube Underwriting Ltd. “We are seeing these breakdowns happen in a shorter time frame for the year,” said London-based insurer of about $3.5 billion in wind assets by year 38. newer turbines and that’s pretty worrisome. Nation. If failure rates continue to rise, premiums may increase or new coverage limits may be imposed, he said.

What can I say?

Clearly the hundreds of tons of carbon-intensive concrete, steel and petroleum resin used to build each wind turbine are not enough.

What we need for truly secure wind turbines is more steel and coal-fired concrete, even more plastic and factory-made fiberglass or carbon fiber, to strengthen the structures and ensure the turbines are powerful enough to provide clean energy. /sarc
