Billam-Smith leaves Matchroom to fight Sky
Chris Billam-Smith is no longer a Chamber fighter when he decides not to renew his contract with them.
The European and Commonwealth cruiser champions have signed a one-match deal with Sky, the match will be on 30 July against Isaac Chamberlain at the Bournemouth International Centre.
‘The Gentleman’ has won seven straight games since losing to Richard Riakporhe in the deciding match three years ago. A win over Chamberlain could lead to a rematch with Boxxer / Sky Sports cruiserweight who is about to achieve his first world title.
Billam-Smith is delighted to have finally made a big televised fight in Bournemouth, which has spurred him on to team up with Sky.
Billam-Smith said to Daily Echo:
“It means everything and that’s why I didn’t renew my contract with Matchroom – because I wanted a home game and they couldn’t do it due to DAZN,”
“I think Eddie wants to do that but DAZN is a global platform. They want world championship matches or big names.”
“I have yet to fight for a world title and I am not a big name yet. That’s it and it means a lot to me when I have to go back home, I have to go somewhere else.”
“Thankfully, we got this fight over the line. It was just a one-time deal with Sky, and it was exciting times. “
The 31-year-old revealed he has been offered a three-match contract to stay at Matchroom but the fighting chance at Bournemouth has given Sky an advantage.
“With Matchroom, I’m so grateful for everything they’ve done and it’s because of this fight that I want to go home. It makes sense.”
“For now, just focus on this fight, get the job done and I’m sure a lot of doors will open.”
The July 30th pass also includes the eagerly awaited debut of Olympic silver medalist Ben Whittaker undertaker Greg O’Neill. Frazer Clarke co-medal winners will also feature Caroline Dubois, Joe Pigford, Mikael Lawal, Hassan Azim, Bournemouth all-around boxer Lee Cutler and John Docherty against Diego Costa.
