Artificial flowers

It could be argued that for many of us, the ’80s spoiled a few things (as much as we love the memories!). Dryness and flowers may be the biggest offenders in my eyes… the color, the style and the dust just reminds me so much of her house. And not necessarily in a good way!

For years, I rarely used artificial flowers with the memories in mind. While I appreciate convenience, I can never find anything real enough to fool my eyes!

Well… times have changed, friends. And now, I’m excited to share that I think fake flowers are having a moment. Some are so realistic that they could fool even my florist friends! That’s really saying something, isn’t it?

The quality has improved a lot, and there are services that create that soft, romantic look that you know, I love so much. However, I think there are some important things to keep in mind when you are choosing artificial flowers for your home.

Julie’s tips for the best fake flowers

  • Stick with light, soft colors. Stronger colors tend to look a bit more artificial to my eyes!
  • Use all a body type. This is important! Using two or more flowers can distract you and keep you busy. Simplicity is elegance in this situation.
  • Design them simply. I think the key to using artificial flowers successfully is to group them as if they were collected from your garden. Think tall tree trunks with plenty of space in and around them to create a spacious and airy garden, or a tighter, compact bunch can work just as well. (Think of the compact hydrangeas or the gathering sprigs of magnolia you see below.)
  • Use the best you can afford. When it comes to artificial flowers, the more advanced stems tend to take more realistic pictures. If you plan to keep the stems as part of your decor for many seasons, they may be worth the investment.
  • Hide the trunk. Although I usually design fresh flowers in clear glass vases that I love (find favorite vases are here), fake flowers tend to look more real when put together in ceramic vases. The stems often give them away like fake flowers, even when the flowers aren’t in bloom!
  • Bend, do not cut. Here’s a tip from a florist friend, and I love it! Why cut tall stems when you can just bend them to hide them in a vase (ceramic, not glass)? That way, you can get the height you want without sacrificing length for future use.
  • As simple as beautiful. A bouquet of fake flowers in your post (or bedroom, bath, or living room) can go a long way. Use less artificial flowers indoors for maximum effect.
