Bernhards Secure $1.2M Mind Out for Fledgling Band
Dana and Jim Bernhard of Lynnhaven Racing are beginning a band—a broodmare band.
On the primary day of the Keeneland November Breeding Inventory Sale, they added the 4-year-old Tapit filly Mind Out to their collection, emerging victorious after bidding rose to a fever pitch of $1.2 million for the chestnut filly.
As a juvenile, Mind Out ran third in the Surfer Girl Stakes on the turf before coming back the following year to be second best in the California Oaks on the dirt for her connections of Gainesway Stable (Antony Beck), LNJ Foxwoods, and Andrew Rosen. She went through the ring consigned as Hip 168 by Gainesway as agent.
“She was purchased for Jim and Dana Bernhard of Lynnhaven Racing,” said Matt Weinmann, CEO of Equine Analysis Systems. “Mind Out is a beautiful Tapit filly; she showed a lot of talent on the track. She is gorgeous.”
Miss Mischief , Mind Out’s Into Mischief half sister, ran out $522,980 over five years on the track—including wins in the 2013 Pearl City Stakes and in the H.B.P.A. Stakes in 2014 and 2015. At 5, she placed in the Hendrie Stakes (G3), Trillium Stakes, and the Presque Isle Downs Masters Stakes (G2). In her penultimate start at 5 she took the Bessarabian Stakes (G2) at Woodbine.

“It is a good household. We now have performed with a couple of horses from the household and are actually enthusiastic about her,” Weinmann mentioned. “The Bernhards are simply getting their broodmare band began, and he or she shall be one of many standout broodmares on the farm.”
With a daughter of Tapit out of a Lemon Drop Kid mare, options for matings are endless, Weinmann said.
“We will sit down and talk her mating over; we threw some ideas around but haven’t evaluated that yet,” he remarked.
Earlier in the day, Bernhard secured the mare Glitter and Gold , consigned as Hip 122 from the Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales Agency consignment, for $700,000 for the same connections. The Bodemeister mare out of Expo Gold is in foal to Curlin on an early March cover. Most notably, she is a half sister to Eclipse champion 3-year-old filly Swiss Skydiver (by Daredevil ), who sold Nov. 9 at The November Sale, Fasig-Tipton’s marquee breeding stock sale, Katsumi Yoshida of Japan for $4.7 million.
“She is lovely,” Weinmann said. “These are our first two broodmares, and we are looking to get a few more, hopefully.”
