Benn Wants Thurman Fight Next

The next fight for Conor Benn could come against former welterweight champion Keith Thurman.

The 25-year-old’s promoter Eddie Hearn had teased that a “big, big fight” was on the horizon for the world title contender with former unified 140lbs champion Jose Ramirez also in the running.

Boxing Social’s Andi Purewal recently caught up with Benn and asked him if the Thurman fight is the one, he wants.

“Most definitely,” he answered.

Benn had been rumoured to be fighting on July 9, a date which may now go to Dereck Chisora, but it looks likely his return could come in September instead.

“It was supposed to be July 9 but it’s cutting it pretty close. No world level fighter is going to take it on 7-8 weeks’ notice.”

Benn and Thurman are ranked three and four by the WBO, respectively, and the Brit was asked if he though the fight would have to be put forward as a final eliminator for it to happen.

“It would have to be,” said Benn.

“I can’t see PBC (Thurman’s promoters) saying, ‘Yeah we’ll let him fight on a DAZN show’. I don’t see my team letting me fight on a PBC show. So, it would take for a final eliminator to be ordered which could very well be. If it is ordered may the highest purse bidder win.”
