Behind the scenes: Watch this Golden and Blue Hour Portrait

Finding the best light to bathe our subject in can be one of the most difficult parts of planning a shoot. We strive for those beautiful golden hour photos and sometimes completely eliminate other times of the day. Harsh sunlight can be hard and clouds can be flat, but what about blue hours?

Coming to you from one of the coolest photographers on YouTube, Eric Floberg, this video invites us to take a behind-the-scenes look at the creative thoughts behind a photo session. Engagement photography session starts at golden hour and turns to blue hour, the beautiful cool light we are bestowed with after sunset below the horizon. As Eric pointed out, this is the point where many photographers can often stop shooting, but we’ll see some great results by staying and shooting during this period.

Eric takes us through his thoughts on how he allows a shot to flow, and there are a few tricks he shares. What’s interesting is that he’s also shooting film and digital at the same time.

Behind-the-scenes videos are the perfect video to see how some of the great photographers get their creative inspirations. What I like most about the way Eric shoots is his efficiency. He doesn’t use any flash, which I find can slow down the whole process and ruin the natural flow. I imagine this also leaves him with a wider variety of photos to choose from after the session.

So, before watching the video, can you guess what the sunset of the counter is?
