MATCH PREFERENCE
Australia takes on Peru in the high-stakes league playoff final at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium on Monday. Both Peru and Australia are in the play-offs for the second time in the World Cup qualifying campaign, but this time only one team has progressed.
It will be only the second meeting between the two sides – Peru beat Australia 2-0 in the group stage of the 2018 World Cup.
Peru has a stable squad under the guidance of Ricardo Gareca and will step into the favorites of the competition for a second consecutive final, while Australia is in danger of not participating in the World Cup. for the first time since 2006.

Socceroos will take advantage of having played in Qatar recently; three World Cup qualifiers since 2021 and have been acclimatizing to the conditions over two weeks. Peru, meanwhile, will play in Qatar for the first time.
“Our preparations are already underway. We had four matches (including a friendly) in Qatar. It’s a completely different experience playing in an air-conditioned stadium compared to a regular stadium. Our boys are used to that. I see it as an advantage that Peru has never played in these conditions before,” said Aussie coach Graham Arnold.
Australia will have to be wary of Peru’s technically skilled players, especially Christian Cueva and Andre Carillo, and may have to take chances.
Arnold, who has taken over the job since leaving the 2018 World Cup, is optimistic in his expectations.
“Our players are ready. They know their job and I have a simple message for them: Go out and do it the ‘Australian way’. Fights for 90 minutes and is very physically fit. Technically, the Peruvians will be surprised by how much Australian football has improved,” he said.

It is estimated that more than 10,000 Peruvian supporters are expected to be at the venue for their team to continue. Of the support, Peru coach Ricardo Gareca said: “Only the World Cup can deliver these emotions, what people can do, we have experienced that closely. In Russia, where the Peruvians came out of nowhere, the sacrifice that everyone made, is an extraordinary moment, you have to live it.”
The winner will join Group C including France, Denmark and Tunisia in the final.
