A man has been arrested after shooting at the check-in area of ​​Canberra airport, Australia.

The airport was evacuated and planes were grounded for about three hours on Sunday afternoon as police recovered guns and inspected the area.

No injuries were reported but footage from the scene showed bullet holes in the station’s glass panels.

Police said the man arrested was “supposedly the sole responsible person”, although his motives are unclear.

ACT policy executive director Dave Craft said the suspect was seated near the glass door of the departure check-in area.

“After about five minutes, this man removed the gun from his owner and fired about five times,” he said.

“From what I can see from the crime scene, the man opened fire on the glass inside the station.

“No shots were fired at people…customers or employees.”

‘Everyone’s faces were quite frightened’

Australian Broadcasting Corp reporter Lily Thomson, who was at the airport and heard the footage, realized something was wrong when people started shouting “run away”.

“I saw this lady with a child and the fear on her face and I knew it was something serious,” she said.

“So we all ran and I stayed with her and her baby and hid behind an information desk. We were there for a few minutes until security told us to evacuate to the parking lot. .

“People were hiding behind chairs and people were running.

“It’s horrible. We don’t know what’s going on. Everyone’s faces are quite terrified.”
