Audi is slowly losing all its coupes and convertibles.

Audi Cars There may soon be no more coupes or convertibles in Australia as the brand gradually abandons these body styles globally.

“Demand for coupes and convertibles is definitely waning,” said Peter Strudwicke, Audi Australia’s director of product planning.

“People are moving to new body styles, and Sportbacks are one of them.

“It could be a low-slung Sportback like the A5, or it could be a Sportback SUV.

“So there are more and more new body styles coming out, they are always changing and we are always reacting to those changes.

“But certainly the volume we see in coupes and convertibles has been steadily declining, and it’s not just us. You see other manufacturers reducing or discontinuing certain variants of those vehicles.”

Audi Australia recently introduced Competition Plus packages for RS4 And RS5but decided to only bring the latter model here in five-door Sportback form, although the RS5 Coupe is also available with this package in Europe.

“The reason we offer the Competition Plus version of the A5 Sportback is because it sells significantly better than the coupe,” said Strudwicke.

He also noted that the coupe version was ruled out because the Competition Plus’ signature seats are not available globally.

These seats don’t fold forward, and therefore won’t fit in a coupe… unless you really want to test your passenger’s agility.

VFACTS industry sales data does not break down Audi sales into regular versions, the more appealing S version, and the most appealing RS version.

However, sales figures for the A5 coupe and convertible range – which includes the S5 and RS5 models – show just 78 units were sold in total in the first eight months of this year.

The A5 Sportback range – which includes the S5 and RS5 models – has sold 307 units this year.

Audi has revealed the next-generation A5, which is due to launch next year, but only in five-door liftback and five-door wagon body styles.

There is no word on a replacement for today’s two-door coupe and two-door convertible body styles, which would seem to suggest that Audi will cede this segment to BMW (with Line 4) and Mercedes-Benz (with CLE).

Audi’s coupe and convertible lineup has been gradually shrinking.

Production of TT coupe and convertible ended last year and local supplies are running low, while R8 has stopped production at the plant this year.

The supercar was discontinued locally in 2021, shortly after A3 Convertible stop production when moving to new generation.
