NBA after Kenosha: Timeline of basketball’s response to protests through the Kyle Rittenhouse trial
Blake, a black man, was shot multiple times by Rusten Sheskey, a white police officer, in Kenosha, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. Sheskey was ultimately not charged by state or federal prosecutors.
Rittenhouse, then a 17-year-old from Antioch, Ill., joined a group of other armed men in downtown Kenosha. He shot Joseph Rosenbaum, Anthony Huber and Gaige Grosskreutz, the latter of whom survived. Rittenhouse turned himself in to the police in Antioch on August 26, and was extradited to Kenosha, where he was charged with the following:
- First degree reckless murder using dangerous weapons
- The first degree recklessly endangers safety, uses dangerous weapons
- Intentional first-degree murder, using dangerous weapons
- Intentional first-degree murder, using dangerous weapons
- The first degree recklessly endangers safety, uses dangerous weapons
- Person under the age of 18 in possession of a dangerous weapon (later dismissed)
- Failure to comply with emergency orders from state or local authorities (later fired)
Most of the incident was captured on video, and the trial that followed became heavily polarized. Prosecutors in the case allege that Rittenhouse provoked the protesters before shooting at them, while defense argued that Rittenhouse acted in self-defence.
The Milwaukee Bucks are scheduled to play at home tonight at 8pm ET/7pm CT. The Bucks, which play 40 miles from Kenosha, were the first NBA team to boycott after the summer 2020 protests.
After the verdict in the case attracted national attention, the sports world reacted to the news that Rittenhouse was found not guilty.
My major in History comes as no surprise and if you’re crazy calm down and if you’re having fun remember the situation for the future! I guess I could say that the case closed! https://t.co/jn8UUqLCP4

Every time Americans get a chance to do the right thing they never did. This is the guy who will one day become a law enforcement officer and will go on to kill more and more people because he knows he can get away with it. America continues to do this giving us every chance they get. pic.twitter.com/RBdPkbgX9Y

It is a myth how no one is surprised by this ruling! At this point, what’s the real point? You can literally have random white people, as well as the police, kill an unarmed black person/person and still get away with it.

This is a system that plans to normalize the killing of black people as much as possible to the point where we don’t even complain anymore, not even surprised by it anymore.

I’m sad, but not surprised.
I’m sick, but not shocked.
I am disgusted, but not derailed.Equality is not a finish line we cross, but a path we walk. I remind us there is still a long way to go. #KyleRittenhouse
