At $5,500, is this SBC-powered Mercedes 450 SLC 73 a good deal?

It has long been said that there is no substitute for cubic inches and today Nice price or no dice 450 SLC has increased the stakes for the. Let’s see if its price tag also makes this an unrivaled car.

Hollywood’s Indiana Jones made a name for herself by appropriating antiquities under justification that they “belong to a museum.” YThat’s right.

of yesterday Comet Mercury 1974 has a nice enough shape to be reasonably considered museum quality, however, with a three-in-a-tree gearbox, it will it would be a pity not to keep it on the road and just enjoy it. The only real stumbling block to that is the $10,500 asking price, which 60% of you consider too expensive for your taste, making it a loss.

Hey, what’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done? Naked skydiving? Sketchy third world canyon bungee jumping? Street sushi in the old days? Call me crazy, but I don’t think any of them can hold a candle to drive for a 1973 Mercedes Benz 450 SLC with dual air intakes and angry eyes sticking out of the hood. I mean, it might be less dangerous, but it’s still pretty bad.

On the other hand, the C107 that appeared in this inventory has been lost raison du nom 4.5 liter SOHC fuel injection V8 instead of the engine Chevy small block 350 cubic inches. As advertised, it was recently fitted with a new 280 Comp cam and lifter as well a double row roller chain to drive all that.

That’s pretty much all the ad tells us about the car. No explanation as to when or why it is Chevy-ized, nor is there any information as to why the maker went so far when it comes to carbs and intake for a tall boy. It notes that the transmission is automatic but leave it at that.

The pictures show a pretty clear installation and the eyes on the air intake butterflies are a nice touch. One of the problems with the car’s original engine was its Bosch D Jetronic fuel injection can be difficult to use and maintain for the uninitiated. Maybe it’s the engine?

The rest of the car seems to be completely usable. The burgundy paint could be a repaint as there appears to be some oversprayed primer on the panel behind the door. However, that might just be some weird fading. Apparently, the hood was either pieced together or an aftermarket part of some kind. If the latter, I wonder where one would find something like that?

All the trim is intact and this being a pre-1974 car it has lovely slim bumpers. There don’t seem to be any rust issues — at least not any noticeable ones — as well as glass or lighting issues. The alloys with chrome-plated deep discs wrapped in fat tires do a pretty good job of filling the wheel cavities beneath all that.

Finished interior except sun visor and has a large sunroof above the front bucket seats. The upholstery material appears to be durable MBTex and that thing have held up as well as us expectable. The same cannot be said for carpets and rugs that seem to have faded into a mess– beige color all over the car.

According to the ad, the odometer breaks at 75,000 miles but in a crazy car like this, does that matter? No one is going to buy it to be a reliable commuter—it’s to stare at car encounters and piss off both Chevy and Mercedes purists. It should do a Great job in both tasks.

Before we can test those talents, we’ll have to deal with the small issue of car pricing. The seller is asking for $5,500 for the Benz, bringing both the vehicle and valid paperwork. What do you think, it can reasonably ask much? Or, is the price tag just the same as the car?

You decide!
