There is sound science and published research that supports this concept.

Dear Goop, I am in my forties, noticing some changes and wondering if my nutritional needs have changed. Are there any nutritional issues I should be aware of? —Drea
Hi, Dream. Yes, yes, because nutritional needs change as we age. Many body systems do not function completely without maintenance as in our twenties. We could be a little more tired. Our immune system is not completely effective. Our hormone levels change. Our brains change: We are wiser and more knowledgeable but may lose a bit of processing speed. Our guts may not be working perfectly anymore – perhaps antibiotics and alcohol have thrown them off balance.

Low power levels may have a simple solution. If you menstruate, you lose iron every month, and this can catch up with you over the years, especially if your periods get heavier or if you don’t eat a lot of meat. Vitamin B12 is also important for energy and strength. As we age, some people make less acid in the stomach or we take antacids, which can lead to us not absorbing as much vitamin B12 from food. Stomach acid is generally considered undesirable, but it’s for good reason – digestion and absorption of calcium, protein, and vitamin B12. This is especially true for vegetarians, as their diets are naturally low in B12. Mom download has a lot of this vitamin, as well as all goop’s vitamin protocols. Or if you prefer, one capsule daily B Famous can do the trick. *

Another vitamin to watch out for is D – which boosts immunity and helps build strong bones – as it’s made in our skin and slows down in aging skin. There is not much vitamin D in foods. And when we try to prevent skin aging by using sunscreen, we block the rays needed for vitamin D production. Nue Co. Vitamin D Spray is an easy solution to this conundrum. *

The immune system slows down as we age. It is complex and dependent on all nutrients, not just a few, so the best support comes from a diet full of whole foods. Key nutrients to look for include vitamins A, D and C; niacinamide; and zinc. goop’s multivitamin protocol Balls in the Air—Which targets immunity — provides a great deal of these. Niacinamide is also particularly valuable for maintaining healthy skin. *

When it comes to immunity, rocking the exciting (not so) world of nutrition scientists, check data again on vitamin C requirements came to a surprising conclusion. The amount of vitamin C we need for collagen formation and for healthy tissues and scars seems to be higher than the 45 milligrams daily recommended by WHO. And the US RDA (recommended dietary intake) of seventy-five to ninety milligrams can be borderline—especially if it’s not consumed every day. *

The average age of menopause in the US is fifty-one, and it is not unusual to begin experiencing perimenopausal symptoms before the age of forty. One of goop’s other great multivitamin protocols, Madame Ovary, provides nutritional support for mild hot flashes, mood swings and stress fatigue. I especially appreciate that lutein and zeaxanthin are included to benefit the eyes and skin. Like other goop multivitamins, Madame Ovary is packed with B vitamins to aid in neurotransmitter production and energy. If you’re not sure which of our vitamin protocols is right for you, check it out column Ask Gerda before. *

Our poor hearts face years of abuse: We run out of antibiotics, we don’t eat enough vegetables to feed our flora, and we drink too much alcohol. I know it can be confusing to choose from among the many products that target gut support, so I highly recommend it when goop’s nutrition scientists recipe Gut Microbiome Superpowder. It’s a powerful product that addresses many aspects of gut health with a prebiotic food for gut bacteria, my favorite probiotic in the world. a clinically validated dose, digestive enzymes, and glutamine to nourish the intestinal cells. The powder has no taste, is easy to incorporate into your daily routine and — like all of our products — is manufactured in a facility that uses current good manufacturing practices (CGMP). You can read more about goop’s quality control processes and how supplements are evaluated in an earlier Ask Gerda column. *

Even if you’re not at the age where you’re thinking about your brain power, you probably know someone. Scientists at MIT have developed a unique form of magnesium, magnesium L-threonate, designed to support optimal levels of this mineral in the brain and, therefore, support memory and cognition. Preclinical research and a clinical study demonstrated that participants improved their memory after taking this supplement for six weeks. *
