Are dogs allowed in the Post Office?


Going to the local Post Office is one of our daily errands as we send packages to our YUCKY PUPPY store and receive our own mail. If that’s part of your regular errands list, you might be wondering if dogs are allowed in the post office and if you can bring your dog.

Is the US Postal Service dog-friendly?

US Postal Service locations are NOT dog friendly. You are not allowed to bring your dog into the post office.

You will need to leave your dog at home during trips to the PO or try to do as much work as possible through USPS store online.

Why are dogs not welcome in the post office? One most likely reason is due to the large number of postal workers who are victims of dog bites every year. In 2021, more than 5,400 USPS employees were bitten by dogs while on their postal routes.

The USPS has had a long history of problems with dogs attacking the postmen they took out. National Dog Bites Awareness WeekAn event in June aims to raise awareness about the issue and how homeowners can help reduce the risk of a bad interaction between their dog and the postal carrier.

Are service dogs allowed in the US Postal Service?

Under Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a trained service dog is allowed to accompany his person in public places including post offices. This only applies to service dogs, not emotional support dogs.

The USPS has published guidelines for postal workers and other employees who may see service dogs entering post offices.

The PO-209, Retail Operations Manual, published for USPS employees, has specific recommendations for service dogs at the post office:

“If it is not clear that the animal is a service animal, the retail employee may ask, “Is this a necessary service animal for people with disabilities?” or “Is this your pet?”

“You may not ask for proof or certification of animal training, request a special ID card for the animal, or inquire about the person’s disability.

“Retail associates may not require a person to remove their service animal from the premises unless: (1) the animal is out of control and the animal’s owner is not taking effective action to control it. control it, or (2) the animal poses a direct threat to the health or safety of others. In addition, a reseller may not charge an additional fee for a service animal, remove a person carrying a service animal from areas open to the public, or separate the person from the service animal. Do not touch, feed, talk to or otherwise distract any service animal without the owner’s permission.”
