Another Chinese challenger brand caught testing in Australia


This is the first Changan car to hit Australian roads; the Deepal S07.

Spotted on Sydney’s M4 Motorway, the electric SUV – which could be mistaken for a Cupra – appears to be undergoing technical evaluation, with a crew on board the all-electric vehicle, Tesla Model Y– large SUV

Changan is one of China’s four largest automakers and has a wide range of electric and electrified vehicles, of which the S07 is under the Deepal sub-brand.

The model is said to have been jointly developed with Huawei and CATL and is related to the platform. Mazda EZ-6 tram.

The S07 is available as an all-electric SUV and a range-extended EV. The model seen in Sydney is believed to be the all-electric model, with just a fuel cap.

It’s a five-seater, but it’s rear-wheel drive only, with an electric motor producing 99kW and 320Nm of torque.

The battery in the S07 EV is a 66.8kWh NMC unit, with a claimed DC charge time of 35 minutes from 30 to 80 percent, which is slower than average for DC charging. Claimed range on the easy CLTC test cycle is over 500km.

There are reports of a larger 79.97kWh battery pack, which would provide an EV range of up to 620km under the CLTC testing protocol.

There is information about the EREV range-extended model with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine, which can run on electricity for up to 200 km and can drive more than 1,100 km.

Fuel consumption is expected to be around 5.0L/100km.

The car measures 4750mm long (on a 2900mm wheelbase), 1930mm wide and 1625mm tall. According to the spec sheet, it rides on 20-inch wheels – but the test car seen here is fitted with different rims to those in the brand’s official press release.

Other technical details include MacPherson strut front suspension and “H-arm multi-link” rear suspension, with four-wheel disc brakes incorporating regenerative braking.

The list of safety specs includes adaptive cruise control with stop/go, forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist and lane departure warning, traffic jam assist, as well as blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert with braking, driver fatigue monitoring and automatic high beams.

The car also has a driving mode system with Eco, Sport, Comfort and Custom options.

Other spec highlights include a head-up display with augmented reality navigation, a 15.6-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Bluetooth, a 14-speaker audio system with driver headrest speakers, a wireless phone charger, ambient lighting, gesture control, online music and navigation, and over-the-air updates.

Further proving that the Australian market is about to see an unprecedented number of new players, Changan is also expected to offer Toyota LandCruiser 300 opponent with gasoline range extender.

The vehicle is called the G318, a rugged off-roader built on a ladder-frame chassis for more rugged performance when unprotected.
