Animal Equality introduces a new initiative to protect animals in Hidalgo | Animal equality

On 20 December 2021, during the session of the Hidalgo Congress and with the support of a member of the Labor Party Legislative Group and 9 other delegates and local animal groups and civil associations like Biofutura, Animal Equality has proposed a bill with a draft decree that would reform and add provisions to existing state animal protection laws. This initiative comes after the launch of the Animal Equality Program investigation at the Tizayuca Slaughterhouse and legal claims presented.

WHAT ALWAYS MEANS FOR ANIMALS: The bill would mandate the inclusion of the pet welfare section in “Ley de Protección y Trato Digno a los Animales del Estado Libre y Soberano de Hidalgo.” – Animal Protection Law in Hidalgo, and two new criminal classifications.

When adopted, it will:

  • Forced molting is prohibited, i.e. deprivation of food and water throughout the life of the animal
  • The selection of the breed ensures that the health of the animal is taken into account
  • Requires that painful mutilations (such as mutilation, tail clipping, castration) be performed by trained personnel under veterinary supervision
  • Require animals to be stunned before slaughter
  • Require no other animals when other animals are slaughtered
  • Mandatory video surveillance at slaughterhouses
  • Ensure that all animals have access to adequate food and water
  • Provide animals with a significant improvement in the environment, enough dark time to rest and enough light
  • Provide disaster management instructions including evacuation if required
  • Density requirements should allow access to food and water for chickens and allow the animals to move and change positions naturally.
  • Punishment of fines, imprisonment and revocation of licenses to anyone who fails to apply permitted methods of stun and murder and anyone who manages or operates clandestine slaughterhouses

WHY NEEDED ?: Animals raised and killed for consumption suffer a great deal from breeding to slaughter because there are currently no criteria to determine how to provide them with the most basic welfare.

In the state of Hidalgo, about 41 million animals are raised and killed for food, mostly birds. In addition, Hidalgo is also famous for the production of lamb for barbecue. There are about 125 slaughterhouses in the territory.

HOW ARE ANIMALS BEEN USED LIVE FOOD AND DIET?: On farms, animals live in overcrowded conditions and are subjected to cruel practices such as deprivation of food and water, as in the case of chickens, for example, used to accelerate egg laying. .

Once the animals arrived at the slaughterhouse, their suffering worsened and culminated in the slaughter not following the Official Mexican Standards – for slaughter or transport – as we demonstrated in our investigation. shock at Tizayuca Area City Trail, Hidalgo.

Once this law is passed, Animal Equality will develop rules and regulations for animals kept in the cities of Hidalgo. The initiative will be voted on in 2022. We are confident that it will be passed.

Sign the messagen (in Spanish) to help strengthen animal protection measures.
