American Airlines decided to be honest with customers. They may not like it

It can fly. Can it be. Check back later.

There comes a time in your life when you need to unburden yourself.

Let it out, let it go, let it wash over the others, and see the reaction.

more Technically incorrect

Somehow, releasing your inner conflicts, flaws, and torments can make you feel free.

Or, at least, a little lighter.

Thus, I was transported to a noble side of empathy, upon discovering that a American Airlines the executive told it the way (he really felt) it was so.

Brian Znotins is the airline’s vice president of network planning. The basic economy of aviation jobs.

He has a soul, you know. And he chose to let it hang out there. You see, he wants airline customers to know that their vacation plans can still — just maybe — go up in smoke, not on an American Airlines plane.

Here’s how we do it. Or Try

On the plane of Let me know why podcast, Znotins explain How airlines create their schedules.

Before the pandemic, American announced the schedule 90 days before it went into effect. “For now, we will publish it 100 days before the start of the schedule.”

This feels like great news. Business travelers have more time to choose when to visit clients or colleagues they haven’t seen in years. Leisure customers now have more time to complete a visit to friends and family at the end of the year.

However, if you’re the type of person who likes – or even needs – to plan more in advance, there’s a problem.

“The flight that we were selling then was actually based on the reservation schedule.” Ah, so if you book up to 330 days in advance, you definitely know that your flight may not be available when the time comes.

As time goes on, there is a very high probability that the final schedule will largely resemble the placeholder, Znotins said.

“But with the pandemic,” he added, “Obviously, those reservation schedules become much less reflective than the actual schedules we plan to fly.”

Information is still loading

Here, less good news begins.

Today, the American fly’s schedule is actually smaller than the published ones. “And that’s because building a schedule takes time, and it takes a lot of information and input from the operation,” Znotins said.

One can imagine that’s how many businesses operate. You get your data, you get your input, and you get your decision.

Znotins said the gathering of the Americans took place 120 days before departure. Or maybe once every 100 days. Or maybe even closer.

Ah, you’re starting to get it, I’m afraid.

“Sometimes we don’t know which flights we’re going to and we don’t operate any flights,” Znotins admits. “Because we don’t know how many planes we will have and pilots, mechanics and ground staff to support the schedule. So a flight may or may not work.”

That can feel an unconsidered touch.

I worry that some American Airlines customers will wonder why there is no buffer to give it a more solid feel. Both for them and for the airline itself.

I worry that more American Airlines customers will fear these words more than anything else, especially with airlines blaming staff shortages as one of the reasons for flight cancellations. . You mean when you publish your schedule, you really don’t know if the flight will take off or not?

“What we’re really reluctant to do is put our customers through some changes, a number of times,” says Znotins.

A relief, that.

Znotins was displeased when the media portrayed the seemingly frequent changes of Americans as a big deal. It cannot. It is only part of the process.

He took the time to talk about programmers and their current lives. He noted that many of them are living away from headquarters in places like Bozeman, Montana, and now more of them are flying for quarterly meetings to headquarters. So Americans must be aware of that.

He chose to describe Bozeman as a “beautiful” place to live compared to the Bay Area. I’m sure there’s nothing like calling Southwest a nicer American airline.

But the potential back of your vacation plans is lying in ruins.

All I want for Christmas is you (To fly, not just try)

Here we are, less than 100 magical days to go before the end of the year. Many people have booked plane tickets for the holiday season. Znotins promises that the airline focuses on leisure travel rather than business.

But should you now book your trip to visit your loved ones – or perhaps to get away from them? Will the schedule be reliable?

“We are trying to fly as much as we can that our operations will support,” said Znotins. “We don’t want to try too hard again.”

Some might translate this as: “We promise not to be (too) greedy and let people down (too often).” Some may even just focus on the word “trying”.

One has to admire Znotins for leaning towards sincerity. Airlines regularly let customers down and treat them with undisguised indifference, all with the aim of pursuing lucre naked.

But you wonder how much faith his employees have in his own open promise to (try to) fulfill for customers.

Why, here’s how the pilots union at American responded to his words:

No, the pilots haven’t secured the pay rise they’re asking for – and come back from a picnic.

So one can only worry that the bad weather here, the small organization of chaos there, and the American year-end – and yours – may still be rife.

Let’s hope the input somehow matches the output. For once.
