Producers wanted Amber’s character, Mercedes, and another member of the school’s glee club, Sam, played by Chord Overstreet, to warm up.
The singer shared: “There should have been a part where she lost her virginity to Sam.” According to Amber, she told executive producer, Brad Falchuk, “Absolutely not.”
Additionally, Falchuk suggested an erotic moment instead of a “full-blown sex scene.”
“He said, ‘Well, what if we knew that you held hands and walked into the room and closed the door?’”
Amber still didn’t understand and gave Falchuk another emphatic, “No.” Her co-host Kevin was impressed with Riley’s courage and determination. Furthermore, he admired the fact that she stood her ground and didn’t do a scene where she didn’t feel comfortable replying, “It’s amazing. Respect.”
Additionally, Amber noted, “I said, ‘I didn’t do it. I never tell you ‘no’. I don’t fight about anything… But, this?!?” Equally important, she believes that the sex scene has no meaning to the development of her character. Mercedes pledges to stay a virgin until she gets married in Season 5. The ‘Dancing With The Stars’ alum doesn’t understand why the fictional high school girl doesn’t “stick to her guns.”
“It’s going to be awkward and I feel like it’s going to be awkward,” Riley said. “I also felt like, yeah, that’s not what my character would do. I just don’t feel it.”
Mercedes and Sam, played by Chord Overstreet, had romantic scenes that made her feel comfortable. Partly because Overstreet brings the energy to “Bambi.”
“He’s so sweet,” Amber said of her co-star. “It’s very similar to his personality. He’s like Bambi.”
“In general, I don’t date much, so living on television is awkward,” the 38-year-old admitted.
Amber expressed that she was worried about how her character was perceived and portrayed because she was an “older girl on television”.
“So you want to protect that and I think they did a great job.” We agreed that an intimate scene would not be necessary for their characters. Sex sells, but Riley proves that couples can thrive in front of the camera without doing the horizontal mambo. If you are a fan of musical comedy, “Glee” is available on Hulu, Apple TV, Disney Plus, Vudu and Prime Video.
