Alfa Romeo Tonale will have enough EV range for most commuters
The Alfa Romeo Tonale plug-in hybrid will officially have an all-electric range of 33 miles, which sets it up Alfa PHEV in a comfortable position relative to its US rivals, though it still doesn’t Toyota Rav4 Prime. Alfa Romeo previously estimated that Tonale PHEV will have a range of more than 30 miles, and the Italian automaker has now made good on that promise.
That’s not enough range for the average 41-mile round-trip commute in the US, but it’s not very far either. Final EPA figures for the Alfa Romeo Tonale give the MPGe a 77 rating, while the compact crossover SUV will have a total range of 360 miles per full charge. Combined fuel economy is 29 MPG, which isn’t as impressive as some of the competition, but Alfa claims that the Tonale PHEV will have the best performance in its class.
Tonale will be equipped with a 4-cylinder, turbocharged, 1.3-liter engine, 180 horsepower capacity, front-wheel drive. There’s a rear-driven 90kW electric motor that produces 184 lb-ft of torque and is powered by a 15.5 kWh battery. When the engine and electric motor are combined, Tonale’s hybrid powertrain produces a total of 285 hp and 347 lb-ft of torque.
According to Alfa, despite its performance, the Tonale will still be able to travel up to 33 miles without “touching the fuel tank”. The Italian carmaker says it wants to stay true to the performance the brand is known for, while also shifting its focus to electrification. While the Alfa Romeo Tonale does not yet represent a full-fledged electric vehicle for the brand, plug-in hybrids like it and the Toyota RAV4 Prime are good alternatives for those who aren’t quite ready to switch to an electric vehicle.
The 2024 Tonale has already been shipped to US dealers, and prices for the Alfa crossover SUV will start at $44,590, including destination. Of course, that’s not yet factoring in any of the IRA’s federal tax credits. EQUAL auto blog note, leasing the Tonale could still make the crossover eligible for the full IRA credit of $7,500, bringing the price down for a basic Tonale Sprint model to $37,090.
