Akwafina Nominated for the NAACP Image Award. .. And Black Twitter is VERY SURPRISED about it!!
Popular Asian actress/comedian Awkwafina has been nominated for the NAACP Image Award and it has made all Black Twitter uproar, MTO News has learned.
On the face of it, the nomination seems reasonable. Awkwafina is Asian, and therefore a woman of color. Therefore, the awarding of nominations to the actress is not without controversy.
Here are her nominations:
Excellent character voice acting performance – Animations
– Andre Braugher – “Spirit Untamed” (Universal Pictures)
– Awkwafina – “Raya and the Last Dragon” (Walt Disney Studios)
– Brian Tyree Henry – “Vivo” (Netflix)
– Eric André – “Sing 2” (Universal Pictures)
– Letitia Wright – “Sing 2” (Universal Pictures)
But Awkwafina encountered some setbacks during her years of appropriating Black culture, by wearing fake “Blaccents” throughout her career.
As Bettina Makalintal wrote in Vice: “As she borrowed from Black culture to make a name for herself, the Nora Lum-born woman implemented a series of racial stereotypes of stylishness and popularity. fame, and through that pose, she became the viral internet rapper for the critically-acclaimed actress. […] When it comes to decompressing the conversation surrounding Awkwafina, many seemingly contradictory things can become true in an instant. Awkwafina is groundbreaking, but she can also feel like a step backwards. ”
