AI-generated artwork wins contest: Artists aren’t happy about it
The Colorado State Fair’s annual art competition had an unusual entry in the painting category. It’s an artistic creation made with Midjourney, an artificial intelligence software capable of creating entire pieces of extremely realistic art with just a few lines of text as input.
And surprisingly, this photo drawn by an AI software won the first prize.
This precedent has caused a lot of discussion, especially in the community of artists. The backlash was heavy, because the creator of the Midjourney show, Jason M. Allen, was initially accused of fraud.
Jason M. Allen says he didn’t break any rules. “I won’t apologize for that. I won, and I didn’t break any rules,” he said when CNN journalists asked him to comment on this story. He also explained that when he submitted the work, he made it clear that the painting was created using AI. And while the competition is dedicated to digital art, artificial intelligence is also a digital tool and therefore fully eligible to be a entry in such a competition, said Jason M. Allen explain.
The painting titled “Théâtre D’opéra Spatial” won the blue ribbon award in the emerging digital artist category. It also became the first AI-generated work to win an award in a high-level art competition.
