After a year at the shelter, Pup falls asleep with a smile as he finally finds his forever family

When a shelter gets too full, the amazing animals can be easily overlooked. In addition, many people are particularly fond of smaller dogs and are often intimidated by both larger dogs and bully breeds. That’s exactly what happened to Petey, a longtime resident of a county shelter.

But when he was transferred to the SPCA and his adorable photo was shared with more viewers, he finally found his forever family.

Petey is the longest resident of his tiny North Carolina shelter. No matter how many people come to consider adoptable animals, he is always overlooked. This happened over and over again over the course of a year. So the shelter decided to reach out to Wake County SPCA for help.

After all, Petey deserves the greatest chance at finding a family forever, and they have more time and resources to find him the perfect home. Plus, they have a larger online audience.

Life in a shelter can certainly be stressful, even if the animal is only there for a short time. Never mind what it feels like to live a whole year behind bars (so to speak). However, Petey is still sweet, friendly, and positively playful. After meeting him, the staff at SPCA were absolutely shocked that such a lover had yet to find a permanent home.

“He was very friendly from day one and very playful. We can’t believe no one wants him,” SPCA spokeswoman Samantha Ranlet said.

As soon as Petey arrived, the SPCA shared a picture of him on social media. (The person at the top of this post.) They actually predicted that it might take some time and maybe even some extra work for him to find a family. But, in just a few short weeks, Petey won the lottery. His new family looked at his sweet face and instantly fell in love with him. When they looked at his photo, they knew that Petey would be the perfect addition to their family.

Now, he is no longer dozing off in the shelter, he does so all curled up in his own cozy bed with a big smile on his adorable face!

It’s the smile of a dog knowing he’s at home,” SPCA wrote in a social media post.

In the end, Petey was taken out of the shelter forever. And now he gets to live his life with a furry brother and lovely people. We are so happy for you Petey!
