Advent Calendar RPS 2021, December 12

All right, warrior. You lived a good life. Now it’s time to open this cold Viking-y door on the Advent Calendar and see what awaits you in the afterlife. Purgatory? Oh no!

What can you give it yet? Of course you can! Its Valheim!

Ollie: I really didn’t expect to like Valheim. In fact, when I describe my experience playing it with my friends, I always say that I have never done such a 180 in a game. When I first started playing, I could see that it was a survival and crafting game like a lot of other games, and the textures were a bit fuzzy and the combat was a bit fun, and I couldn’t really see What attracts people’s attention? What makes Valheim different from every other survival game?

I realized my mistake as time went on. I was looking for a specific spin on this genre. Valheim doesn’t leave the survival format in any big and meaningful way; instead, it adds lots and lots of little details. Details like how the buildings have stability, so you have to lay your foundation very solid if you want to create a bigger house. Or how if you light a campfire in your house without a chimney, the smoke will rise in the house and you will start to suffocate. Or how wooden structures will slowly decompose in the rain.

It also isn’t all to do with construction. Absolutely amazing lighting and weather effects. I never thought I would describe Valheim as beautiful, but it is. Turns out you don’t need high resolution textures for that. And they’re really important, too. In bad weather, birds will perch on the ground or on rooftops, making it easy for them to shoot to collect feathers for your arrows. On foggy mornings, visibility gets so bad that it can really make a big difference to your adventure plans.

Two Vikings walk across the Plains biome in Valheim, in the shadow of Yggdrasil.

And then there’s water. Oh, this country. Head to one of the hundreds of coastlines in your procedurally generated world, and you’ll see the waves actually crash against the shore. During storms, the tide will recede further before rising inland. If you’re sailing (one of my favorite things to do in Valheim), you’ll have to pay attention to the direction of the wind and handle the big waves that knock your ship over.

At its core, Valheim is a simple crafting and survival game. Build your gear, fight monsters, build houses, progress to new biomes to get more powerful resources for better gear, build more houses, wash and repeat. But every part of the game and everything you do in it is well-crafted, fun, and completely filled with character and atmosphere. And the fact that you can easily set up a server and play with friends is also a huge plus, because these character-filled worlds are always more fun to explore with others. This game has given me hundreds of hours of enjoyment this year playing both alone and with friends and family members, and I’m sure I’ll keep coming back to it again and again in the coming years. past year.

Ed: Valheim returns to a time when I felt quite isolated in my small boxy white room. It was a perfect way to gather some friends I missed and form a virtual viking clan to stave off loneliness. Every Friday, we’ll log in and update everything, even though things aren’t really happening at the time.

Kiryun Kazumor, Sigmund, Ragnar the Red, and Dunder Mifflin. As these bearded men, we will go from quite tired and tired, to smiling brightly with life. Valheim really wasn’t all that easily forgiven, but we were enamored with the tough. We will celebrate small victories with shouts and hollers. First, we discovered the important thing is bee was happy. And like kids testing the world with their mouths, we’ll punch everything just to see what happens.

Then we will smash the earth with our fists for a trying to grow carrots, this proved to be more difficult than we could have imagined. ONE semi-naked sails helped relieve stress. In the end, we will taste the victory and participate Carrot Age. Our clan even Adopt a wild boar and find love.

Our chronicle of Valheim antics on RPS was one of the highlights of my year. Not only do I get to share great times with some of my closest friends, I get to write them down in history books for others to enjoy, so maybe they can laugh or brighten a day. someone’s day. I love the idea that other people can sense a part of our goddamn clan if they too need an outlet.
