I can’t count how many times I accidentally let the poor, lost kitten die in the original. The Story of a Street Cat game. So many. I feel really bad! I’m really scared the same thing will happen in the future. Street Cat Story 2: It’s Dangerous Outside. (That ominous subtitle didn’t help!) While living alone indoors is still dangerous for a formerly indoor cat, I found that various quality-of-life adjustments made it easier for Cinnamon (and me) to adjust to life on the street.
A large part of this has to do with how Street Cat Story 2: It’s Dangerous Outside start, as it provides the opportunity to enjoy more presentation and ease into the game. Like some little cat in a big cityThis cat named Cinnamon is accidentally taken outside. After his owner Hazel moves away, he accidentally falls asleep in a box that is taken away. When he wakes up, he is alone. He then realizes that he has been taken far from home, and some stray cats help him adjust to his new life in the big city as he finds his way and perhaps returns to Hazel.
This initial adjustment is helpful, both narratively and gameplay-wise. First of all, we are introduced to Cinnamon and given a means to better connect with the character. The first game had a strong start! However, at that point, it was more focused on empathizing with a poor kid who lost his mother. Here, the character is better established from the start. However, it is even more helpful because of other elements of this implementation. After watching Cinnamon disappear, we also get a chance to practice solving sokoban puzzles safely and learn survival techniques like hunting, scavenging, and sharing with other cats in a safe, controlled environment. This continues into the first few missions, which also help ease us into the world.
Those are the most obvious changes in quality of life! There are many more. Street Cat Story 2: It’s Dangerous Outside makes the game better and more fun to play. For example, you don’t have to pick up items one by one. This is a godsend for the ability to survive and make friends with other cats. You can actually keep some items and carry them with you. An actual inventory? In a game? What a novel idea! Introducing cats that will be important to you from the beginning, as well as some important humans, is also a blessing. You don’t have to wander around trying to figure out who and where everyone (i.e. cats) is. It’s better structured with its chapters and quests. I feel like I messed around more with the original game and this time it’s not an issue.
Perhaps most importantly, the tone is much better. Street Cat Story 2: It’s Dangerous Outside compared to the original game. I felt like every run I was almost guaranteed to fail or fail. Ultimately, it was a terrible attempt. Yes, Cinnamon is still hungry to a fairly consistent degree, and there’s a lot to do here. However, I always felt more optimistic about his odds whenever I played, and the tone of Cinnamon and the other cats also seemed more positive than in the original game.
It’s such a big change that I almost want to say go ahead and play Street Cat Story 2: It’s Dangerous Outside First and foremost, consider, well, not playing the original game. This is coming from someone who enjoyed it, dangerous as it may be. This new entry ultimately feels a lot stronger! Indeed, there are connections to characters from The Story of a Street Catso that reward goes to those who try both. However, this one ends up being much more fun and, since there’s a demo for the PC version on Steam, it’s even easier to see if it’s a good fit for players.
