A new documentary promises a comprehensive look at the animal movement

A new documentary titled Humans and other animals promises to be your first introduction to the animal movement. The film, released on July 12, offers a comprehensive, entertaining and non-graphic look at “why and how animals work.” Animal Equality president and co-founder Sharon Núñez will appear in the film.

Many years in the making, Humans and other animals is an easy-to-understand film that includes evidence for the sentience of non-human animals and the philosophical case for valuing other animals. The film delves into investigations inside factory farms, exposing the suffering of farmed animals and presenting practical steps individuals and organizations can take to prevent the suffering there.

Tickets to regional premieres across the US are available now at HumansAndOtherAnimalsMovie.com/watch.

After the theatrical release, Humans and other animals will be available on streaming platforms starting in August. Details will be announced on the film’s email list, can participate by visiting the film’s website.

Humans and other animals used to be written and directed by Mark DeVries, who is known for his award-winning documentaries Speciesism: The Movie.

A basic introduction to animal movement

Humans and other animals provides an unflinching look at the use of animals in “bizarre and disturbing ways” and the movement to expose this cruelty.

Science—how other animals possess what we think is uniquely human:

  • Do other animals not only use tools but also make tools? Travel through Africa to witness humans’ closest living relatives—including a group of chimpanzees who got their start and hunted with spears.
  • Do other animals really talk to each other? Contrary to popular belief, the answer is yes. Meet the scientist who discovered that prairie dogs use language—with nouns, verbs, and adjectives.
  • Do other animals have extended families in which members understand their relationships with each other? Visit a team of researchers who have spent more than half a century observing the incredible complexity of elephant families.
  • And that’s just the beginning…

Investigations—how powerful, secretive industries rely on hiding the truth:

  • Take a dangerous trip to remote parts of Thailand where elephants are kept captive while not on display for tourists — and meet the woman who has faced death threats for lifting the veil on the elephant.
  • Humanity’s largest direct use of nonhuman animals is industrial livestock farming—factory agriculture. With the help of clever disguises and custom-made investigative equipment, factory farms are revealed in new ways.

Philosophy—how a philosophical idea is changing the world:

  • A simple philosophical argument challenges the popular belief in human superiority over other animals. A growing number of people across the political spectrum are concluding that this “conventional” view reflects a deep bias—speciesism—that makes the use of animals in these industries a of the biggest mistakes in history.
  • Meet the people at the forefront of changing human perspectives on nonhuman animals and hear what they’re aiming for—and how they’re getting there.

Ethics in action:

  • People around the world are standing up for other animals, and this film showcases some of the individuals who have dedicated their lives to the cause—and what they’re achieving.
  • Each of us has the power to make a difference for animals—because our consumer choices have a direct impact on the number of animals on factory farms. These empower
