Toyota Raize gets 1-star safety rating by Latin NCAP – Perodua Ativa twin gets 2 standard airbags, no ADAS

It’s not often that we Malaysians have the good life, but we do. Ativa car. That car comes standard with six airbags and a host of driver assistance systems like autonomous emergency braking and lane keeping assist – and so it gets ASEAN NCAP five-star safety rating.

Unfortunately, outside of this country (and Japan of course), the Ativa trio – Daihatsu Rocky And Toyota upgrade – is not well equipped. This is especially true in Latin America, where the Raize received a disappointing one-star safety rating from Latin NCAP.

The car, which is made in Indonesia for markets like Mexico, Chile and Uruguay, scored just 41 per cent for adult occupant protection, 71 per cent for child occupant protection, 59 per cent for pedestrian protection and 58 per cent for safety assist systems. That’s not surprising, given that the Raize only comes with two airbags as standard (up to six are available, but only the base model was tested) and doesn’t come with any driver aids beyond standard stability control.

Notably, despite having dual front airbags, the Raize was defeated in the frontal offset crash test as it only provided minimal protection to the driver’s chest and thighs (in contrast to the Ativa’s ASEAN NCAP test, where the Perodua provided good protection in these areas).

Protection against neck injuries was also negligible, as was the driver’s chest in the side impact test with a deformable barrier; the side pillar test was not conducted due to the lack of side and curtain airbags.

Despite its minimal safety features, the Raize isn’t exactly cheap as chips – in Chile, the car starts at 11,990,000 pesos (RM55,400). In contrast, the Ativa starts at RM62,500 while being fitted with a host of safety equipment as standard.
