At Volvo’s recent 90/90 event, the company confirmed that its upcoming all-electric sedan – ES90 – will be launched in March next year. Next up will be the EX60, which is seen as an important model for the Swedish brand, as it is a smaller model than the larger EX90.
As you can tell by the name, the EX60 will sit alongside the popular XC60, which has been and remains Volvo’s best-selling model. Unlike the EX90, which was built on the second-generation Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), the EX60 will be the first to use the third-generation version of the platform, known as SPA3.
This will be powered by what the company calls the ‘Volvo Cars Superset’ technology, and will improve SPA2 by increasing core computing capabilities. But the most important change, the company says, is improved scalability so that it can continuously develop and build cars of any size, whether larger than the EX90 or smaller than the EX30 or anywhere in between.
These benefits also enable lower capital expenditures and stronger cash flows in the future. “By having a scalable SPA3 architecture, we create increased synergies and improved technology efficiencies when it comes to core computing, batteries, electric motors, megacasting and module manufacturing – all factors that contribute to significantly reducing the cost of manufacturing cars,” the company said in a press release.
“Our Torslanda plant and its preparation for SPA3 production demonstrate our approach to future production, with all the capacity needed to produce a vehicle in one location. This approach is particularly effective as we can use the same key components across all SPA3-built vehicles, meaning less complexity and more flexibility,” the company added.
