Kingswood Farm Brings Quality to Keeneland in September

Kingswood Farm’s Roderick Wachman is no stranger to success, and although he only brought a very small offering to the Keeneland Yearling Sale in September, his offering was no slouch.

The first of the two Books 1, Hip 30, is the millionaire’s sister Slow down Andy . Slow Andy has won races rated at 2- to 4-years-old, on dirt and turf, including the 2023 Awesome Again Stakes (G1). By Nyquist and out Eddie Square mare Edwina E The dark brown or brown mare is also a full sister to the winning horse. Merchant Team .

“She’s a really great mare, she looks like a mare that can run two laps,” Wachman said.

Bred by Reddam Racing, who sent the 2-year-old stallion Nyquist to victory in 2015, the mare Edwina E was sent back to him again and has produced a foal this year.

“This mare has a really, really good weanling. It’s a really good foal and the cross clearly worked,” he said.

Nyquist, son of Uncle Mo had a great year on the track and in the auction house. He is the sire of four 2024 Grade 1 winners as of September 7, putting him in joint-first place by that metric among North American sire. Unbeaten juvenile mares Immerse yourself And Tenma recently joined the ranks with wins in the Spinaway Stakes (G1) and the Del Mar Debutante Stakes (G1).

At The Saratoga Sale, Fasig-Tipton’s yearling auction of choice, Nyquist blew up the charts with four yearlings selling for an average of $643,750, including a colt purchased for $875,000 by renowned stud dealer Donato Lanni. Nyquist averaged $408,337 for the seven yearlings sold in 2024.

<p>Hip 294 is an outstanding foal. <span class=Street feel was raised in a partnership between Wachman, Brian Kahn and River Oak Farm. He is out of the race Bernardini mare What fox is that? This is her second foal.

“It’s ironic that her first foal was to a Nyquist mare,” Wachman said.

Hip 294 is the son of an ambitious stallion in Street Sense who has produced stallions Maxfield , Speaker Corner And McKinzie who recently sired the Hopeful Stakes (G1) winner McPatrick Opportunity from his first litter. That foal was also the son of a Bernardini mare.

“He’s always been a really nice colt from day one, he’s really strong. He’s a fast Street Sense colt. We’ve always liked that colt and nothing has happened to change my mind,” Wachman said while watching Hip 294.

Wachman last consigned yearlings in 2020. While he also brought a small number to that sale, the statistics speak for themselves. His six-horse consignment that year included three black-type show horses: Grade 1 winners A Mo Reay; The provocateurwho has won first prize in competitions; and has won Del Mo.

“They’re not big horses, which is what I really like about them,” Wachman said. “They’re healthy, balanced, quality horses.”

Wachman has a keen eye for horse meat, as he picks out Grasp the gray from the 2022 Saratoga Sale while working for the MyRacehorse partnership. The Arrogate colt won the Preakness Stakes (G1) and Pat Day Mile Stakes (G2) earlier this year.

“He’s a medium-sized, quality, balanced colt. He’s a late April foal, so he’s a bit of a baby compared to a lot of the more advanced horses at Saratoga. He’s great, but he doesn’t grab your attention like some of the bigger, more mature horses. That’s what I like about him,” he explained.

“And he’s a son of Arrogate, who I think was underrated at the time. He’s also a son of a Smart Strike mare, and they’re great.

“You need to look at the pedigree to assess a horse’s origins,” he said.

Wachman has sold many rated racehorses over the years and if history repeats itself, he will add a few more to that list through the Keeneland consignment sale in September.
