Volvo ES90 electric sedan revealed

On Wednesday, in Sweden, at the launch of the new product 2025.5 XC90 Volvo has given a sneak peek at its upcoming launch ES90 midsize sedan.

The teaser shows a mid-size sedan with a completely different slanted windshield than the S90 petrol sedan. The body style is a sedan, although the rear glass can be raised like the Polestar 2, which has a similar shape to the Audi A6 E-Tron Sportback.

In December, Volvo announced that the first “verification prototype” of a new model codenamed V551 had been built. The new V551 is said to be an electric version of the gasoline-powered S90, which will be called the ES90 when it goes into production. The verification prototype was built at Volvo’s factory in Luqiao, China.

The ES90 will be a sedan or pickup truck, the counterpart of the EX90 electric SUV. The ES90 was originally scheduled to go into production in May. In 2022, a Volvo executive in Australia said Volvo would launch a mid-size electric car by the end of 2024.

The ES90 is expected to be built on Volvo’s SPA2 platform, which is the same dedicated EV platform as the EX90. That will put a battery pack of around 111kwh under the ES90 and the option of single-motor rear-wheel drive or dual-motor all-wheel drive. Power can exceed 500 horsepower.

SPA2 supports bi-directional charging and charging speed up to 250 kw on a DC fast charger. The EX90’s 111-kwh battery, with a usable capacity of 107 kwh, can be equivalent to a real-world range about 300 miles. The ES90 may have better aerodynamics, allowing a sleeker body style to travel further when charging.

Swedish store Varld Technique reports that the 2023 ES90 will be 196.8 inches long with a 122-inch wheelbase. That would make the ES90 6.3 inches longer than the S90 and 1.6 inches longer than the S90L that arrived in the U.S. in 2018.
