JomCharge Partners with Singapore’s SP Mobility on Cross-Border EV Charging; GAC Aion is First Owner

JomCharge EV Connection (EVC) operator has announced a new partnership with SP Mobility, the electric vehicle charging arm of Singaporean power company SP Group. The collaboration, which was officially held at Sutera Mall, Johor Bahru, will see the two companies work together on cross-border electric vehicle charging.

This will allow users of both JomCharge and SP Mobility to use each other’s chargers. The two companies say the move will make it more accessible for EV drivers on both sides of the road and eliminate range anxiety.

In a press release, EVC and SP highlighted the rapid growth in electric vehicle sales in both countries, making the partnership particularly important. Malaysia saw a nearly 150% increase in the first six months of the year compared to the same period in 2023, while in Singapore, one in three new car registrations as of May were electric, nearly double the figure from last year.

Currently, cross-border credit can only be purchased by GAC Aion customers

The first phase of the deal will allow users on one app to buy credits on another. Initially, this will be limited. GAC Aion customers, and in a rather convoluted process, Malaysian car owners will have to visit their Aion dealership to purchase SP credits, which will be credited to an account on the SP app. Singaporeans, on the other hand, will receive JomCharge credits integrated into their Aion car purchase, with the amount credited to a new JomCharge account.

Future plans include offering credits through other platforms and potentially directly to the public. The ultimate goal, of course, is integrated roaming, allowing JomCharge and SP Mobility customers to locate chargers, initiate charging sessions, and make payments in both Malaysia and Singapore without leaving their respective apps.

“EVC is excited to partner with SP to make the cross-border charging experience more seamless,” said EVC CEO Lee Yuen How. “The strong growth in EV adoption in both countries, coupled with the fact that the Causeway is one of the busiest borders in the world, makes this partnership all the more timely.”

“We have received a lot of feedback from users indicating a need for a more seamless cross-border EV charging experience, and we hope this partnership will ensure that,” added CTO Che Hang Seng. “We are also in the process of implementing a second phase that will enable roaming across both platforms.”

“Partnering with an experienced and reputable EV charging service provider like EVC allows us to bring greater convenience to EV drivers in both Singapore and Malaysia. Our combined charging networks in Singapore and Malaysia are extensive and this partnership will further strengthen the growing cross-border EV ecosystem and encourage more people in our respective countries to adopt EVs as we transition towards a low-carbon future,” said Dean Cher, Head of Mobility at SP Group.
