Tamron Introduces 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD Lens for Nikon Z Mount

Tamron has announced its latest lens, the 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD ($1,299 / $1,749 CAD), the next level in the super telephoto space for the Nikon Z mount. The lens is Tamron’s challenge to the existing 100-400mm lenses on the market. It will be smaller and lighter with a wider field of view, allowing for more versatility, measuring 7.3 inches in length and weighing in at a light 41.6 oz. It is powered by Tamron’s VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor, allowing for quietness and responsiveness. It is combined with Tamron’s proprietary VC (Vibration Compensation). This lens will give all photographers a unique and versatile option for almost any shooting situation.

This new lens breaks the common misconception that telephoto lenses are only for shooting distant objects. 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 VC Provides up to half life-size magnification (1:2) at close focus, allowing users to enjoy the world of semi-macro photography with excellent performance, allowing to achieve a MOD (Minimum Focusing Distance) of 8.8” (0.25m) at 50mm.

The lens also features ergonomic features for comfortable operation, an enhanced tactile design, and a dedicated Tamron Lens Utility Terminal. The Tamron Lens Utility 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 VC offers a “Focus Limiter” function. An optional Arca-Swiss compatible mount will be available, allowing users to use a tripod for convenience. Overall, this lens will give Nikon users a very portable lens and a unique opportunity, from the standard focal length of 50mm to the super-telephoto 400mm to even macro photography at 1:2 magnification.

Product Features

Extended 8X zoom ratio starts at 50mm “Standard” and extends to 400mm Ultra-Telephoto

The Tamron 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 VC will be a groundbreaking super telephoto zoom lens with an 8x zoom ratio covering an impressive focal range from 50mm to 400mm. This will allow users to create images ranging from macro, landscape, wildlife, portraits, sports and small group shots in one lens.

Excellent image quality across the entire zoom range

The lens is constructed with 24 elements in 18 groups and uses special lens elements, including two XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion), three LD (Low Dispersion), one GM (Glass Molded Aspherical) and one Hybrid Aspherical lens element, to fully control aberrations including axial chromatic aberration. The lens will also feature Tamron’s renowned BBAR-G2 (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection Generation 2) coating. This coating will minimize ghosting and flare even with backlit subjects. All of this will allow for sharp images no matter what you’re shooting.

VXD delivers high-speed, high-precision AF and excellent focus tracking

Tamron uses the VXD linear motor focusing mechanism in the 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 VC lens, which is capable of high-speed autofocus and precision from the minimum focus distance to infinity. Autofocus on moving subjects will allow photographers to capture sharp images, allowing them to capture bird and sports photography. This lens will be suitable for video and stills shooting because it is extremely quiet when silence is needed.

Compact super telephoto zoom

Measuring just 7.3” (185.8 mm) long and weighing 41.6 oz (1,180 g), the 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 VC lens is light and compact. With a wide focal range of 50mm to 400mm, it is smaller and lighter than typical 100-400mm lenses on the market. This will allow photographers and videographers to carry a lens that allows them to capture virtually anything they encounter.

VC Image Stabilization

The 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 VC lens is equipped with Tamron’s proprietary VC, which enables sharp, shake-free shooting across the entire focal range, including 400mm. Additionally, an AI algorithm is used when the lens selects appropriate compensation characteristics for shooting movies at focal lengths of 100mm or shorter.

Semi-macro photography with 1:2 magnification from 50mm to 70mm focal length

The Tamron 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 VC Lens will be capable of extremely high performance when creating close-up images. You can create these images thanks to a minimum focusing distance of 9.8” (0.25m) at 50mm and semi-macro images with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2 at focal lengths from 50mm to 70mm. At 400mm, the minimum focusing distance is 59.1” (1.5m), allowing for a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4.
