BMW electric cars overtake Tesla electric cars in Europe for the first time in July 2024 – 14,869 cars, up 35% year-on-year

According to data from analytics firm JATO DynamicsBMW’s electric vehicles (EVs) surpassed Tesla’s in Europe for the first time in July 2024. The German automaker delivered a total of 14,869 EVs last month, 308 more than Tesla’s 14,561.

JATO Dynamics noted that BMW’s electric vehicle sales were up 35% year-on-year (YoY), calling it a “strong performance” compared to Tesla, which saw a 16% year-on-year decline. “While the Tesla Model Y and 3 continue to dominate the BEV (battery electric vehicle) rankings year-to-date (YTD), they have recently lost ground,” the company wrote in its release.

“The Model Y is no longer Europe’s best-selling car and has dropped to ninth place in the overall car rankings for July. [among EVs]. BMW’s latest models – the iX1, i4 and i5 – performed well in July, while the new iX2 registered more than 1,300 units. BMW’s electric vehicle registrations are clearly outpacing those of its Mercedes and Audi rivals,” the report added.

Looking at other brands, Volkswagen was the third best-selling electric car brand with 12,213 units, followed by Volvo with 10,533 units, Audi with 8,618 units, Mercedes-Benz with 8,365 units, Peugeot with 6,361 units, Hyundai with 6,292 units, Kia with 6,034 units and Renault with 5,638 units.

It’s worth noting that BEVs outsold plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) by almost two to one in July 2024, with 139,244 deliveries. The Tesla Model Y led the way here, followed by the new Volvo EX30 and Volkswagen ID.4. On the PHEV side, the Volvo EX60 beat the Ford Kuga to the top spot, while the X1 came in third.

JATO Dynamics said in its release that demand for electric vehicles in Europe fell in July 2024, with market share falling from 14.6% in July 2023 to 13.5%. “The lack of clarity around incentives for – and the future of – electric vehicles continues to create barriers for consumers considering an electric vehicle purchase. These factors, combined with low residual values for electric vehicles, contributed to the decline seen in July,” commented Felipe Munoz, global analyst at JATO Dynamics.

Moving away from electric vehicles and focusing on the overall European car market, it is good news for the Dacia Sandero, which is listed as the region’s best-selling model with 22,398 units (+34% year-on-year). Together with the Volkswagen T-Roc and Toyota Yaris Cross on the podium. In total, 1.03 million cars were registered in Europe in July 2024, up 1.5% compared to July 2023.
