Euros’ Zulu Kingdom, Cavallo Bay Leads With Expectations

European imports are common in turf racing, especially in older races, which often feature horses that have competed overseas. Summer colt races tend to be an exception, although you wouldn’t know it from the entries in the With Anticipation Stakes (G3T) on August 29 at Saratoga Race Track.

Two of the nine entrants in the 1 1/16-mile, $175,000 turf race—Zulu Kingdom And Cavallo Bay —has raced exclusively overseas. Zulu Kingdom won on his debut at Saint-Cloud in France for Andre Fabre and now races for US connections: trainer Chad Brown and Madaket Stables owners Michael Dubb, Bill Strauss and Michael Caruso. Cavallo Bay, meanwhile, has won two in Britain after finishing fifth there on debut for British trainer Charlie Appleby and owner/breeder Godolphin. Appleby has a division of runners in the US

Brown said he was pleased with how the Zulu Kingdom, an Irish-American offspring of Ten Kings coached him this summer.

“He fits into our program and is ready to go,” he said.
