Proton expands in Trinidad and Tobago – 261 X50, X90 vehicles exported to the Caribbean country by 2024

Did you know that Proton cars are sold in Trinidad and Tobago? The Malaysian company has been partnering with ANSA Motors Limited in the Caribbean country since March this year and 261 units X50 And X90 were exported to T&T this year – achieving 101% of Proton’s production target, bringing the total number of Proton cars exported here to 366.

The X50 and X90 SUVs were launched in T&T in March and as local demand grew, ANSA Motors decided to up the ante with an increased target of selling 300 units this year. The company was chosen by Proton based on its impressive track record and solid automotive platform.

Despite a population of just 1.5 million, T&T’s automotive industry mirrors that of more developed countries, with car buyers increasingly looking for “bells and whistles” and electrification, according to Tg Malim. “Because there is more innovation in that part of the world, luxury cars are becoming more popular and the emergence of new and exciting brands like Proton is gaining unprecedented acceptance,” the automaker said.

With more than 25 subsidiaries across the Caribbean, the ANSA McAL Group of Companies is one of T&T’s largest conglomerates. Founded in 1919, its subsidiary ANSA Motors has become a “pioneering force” in the automotive industry. The 105-year-old company was the first Ford dealership in the Caribbean and has played such a significant role in the automotive industry that it is now taught in local schools.

“The technology and price point of Proton cars are strengths that we hope to exploit, so we are very excited about the future. We need a valuable brand for segments where we are not present, and the Proton brand certainly fills those positions,” said Jerome Borde, regional sales director at ANSA Motors (pictured above).

“Forging a strong alliance with a local distributor with a strong presence in the region is crucial for us to expand into a new territory,” said Roslan Abdullah, CEO of Proton Edar and Deputy CEO of Proton. “Together, we can harness our collective strengths to overcome challenges, seize opportunities and drive long-term success in overseas automotive markets, expanding Proton’s footprint and creating opportunities for the local ecosystem through increased production volumes.”

Since its launch, Proton has exported 6,501 X-series SUVs to 18 countries, including T&T, Brunei, Egypt, Nepal and Ghana among many other markets.
