Cadillac’s ‘Opulent Velocity’ Concept Is a Vision of the Future of an Electric Car with Gullwing Wings
Welcome back Monterey Car WeekWhere each manufacturer — even those far from California – To be required by law to reveal something extremely expensive. Cadillac, a brand that never lags behind, is joining the club with this model: the Opulent Velocity.
Not like Sollei ConceptSeemingly more or less ready for the road, the Opulent Velocity is a look into the distant future of Cadillac styling. It’s not a dramatic departure from current Caddies—the vertical lighting elements, the reuse of badge shapes, and the wheel designs all point to the company’s current design language—but the concept does bring some new life to Cadillac’s design offices.
The Opulent Velocity is noticeably curvier than most modern, angular Cadillacs, with the overall body shape rounded in a way that’s completely different from the average CT5. There are still hard edges to accentuate, but the overall style is smooth curves—a refreshing evolution.
The interior, accessed through automatic gull-wing doors, is unlike anything you’ll see in a modern Cadillac. Thin seats with high bolsters, a screen centered on the steering wheel, this is not an Escalade at all. The Opulent Velocity is even more tech-focused than the company’s production cars, relying on “Level 4 autonomy” and an “augmented reality head-up display” to get around. These are easy claims to make when your car isn’t real, but they point to the direction Cadillac wants to go: More tech, more automation, but probably not more screens.
Overall, especially in this copper and blue color combination, the Opulent Velocity is a gorgeous car. Hopefully it will see more of these styling elements in production cars, especially the gullwing doors. Cadillac, please, start making those.
