Honda confirms EV sports car is in the works… but it might not be called the NSX

Honda is one step closer to launching its first electric sports car, but the Japanese brand isn’t ready to give it the iconic NSX name just yet.

Speaking to the media including US publications Road & Track At Monterey Car Week, Shinji Aoyama, Honda’s global executive vice president, said electric vehicles (EVs) will be available within four years and in the spirit of Manufacturer.

“We will introduce a sports model in 2027 or 2028,” said Mr. Aoyama.

“We might not call it NSX. It’s like an NSX.”

It’s the latest development in a plan to revive the third-generation NSX, which debuted in 1990 as a V6-powered supercar rival and returned in 2016 as a hybrid.

The 2908th and final generation NSX rolled off the production line in the United States — where it was branded as Acura, Honda’s North American luxury division — in late 2022, and rumors have begun to swirl that its successor will be electric.

In 2021, Acura CEO Jon Ikeda told the US news agency Drive There will be a third generation NSX and it will likely be electric.

“The first generation is a gasoline car. The second generation is a hybrid. There will be another one,” said Mr. Ikeda.

In 2022, he continued to confirm previous comments when he said the next-generation NSX “will be electric.”

British Magazine Car Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe said earlier this year that “at our R&D center, we have a sports car,” adding that the company is “analyzing well” the current electric sports car market.

According to Mr. Aoyama, this electric sports car will run on the company’s 0 Series EV platform, serving as the flagship model in this product line.

So far, the only 0 Series-based concept cars Honda has shown are the low-slung wedge-shaped Saloon and the Space-hub people-mover, although the platform is said to be capable of supporting a wide range of models.

Autocar’s Cars The January report added that the NSX will be powered by a compact ‘e-axle’ powertrain that combines an electric motor, inverter and transmission, and will use a “significantly thinner” battery than Honda’s current EV lineup.

Acura previewed Research on design of electric performance vision last year, could be a tease of what to expect from the next-generation NSX.

Unfortunately, Honda has previously stated that it has “no plans” to bring the 0 Series to Australia, casting doubt on whether we’ll ever see the NSX successor in Australia.
