Top Predictions for the 2024 FedEx St. Jude Championship Golf Tournament
One surprise: McIlroy, a four-time major champion and one of the top contenders, did not make the top five this week. The world No. 3 has gone a decade since his last major victory, trailing only Bryson DeChambeau at the US Open two months ago. McIlroy missed the cut again at the Open Championship last month, finishing 11 over after the first 36 holes.
He ranks outside the top 40 on the PGA Tour in strokes gained, ball-striking accuracy and GIR. The 35-year-old had an impressive showing at this tournament last year, but has failed to qualify in 2022. McIlroy has consistently been overpriced in the year’s biggest events, and the model recommends keeping him out this week.
The model also took into account Schauffele’s finishing position. The 2024 Open champion has been at his best when he’s been in the spotlight this season. He’s won two majors this season while finishing in the top 10 at all four majors, and carried that success into the Olympics, where the American finished T-9. The 30-year-old is second in the FedEx Cup standings with 17 top-25 finishes in 18 events this season.
However, Schauffele has just one top-10 and no top-five finishes at TPC Southwind in six career tournaments. He has finished 24th and 57th in each of his last two FedEx St. Jude Championship events at TPC Southwind. He has finished outside the top 45 in three of those tournaments, so when considering whether to pick him at the second-lowest odds in the field, you’ll have to weigh his recent success against his career struggles on the course.
