As the group settled in on the first morning, the scent of sizzling bacon wafted through the air, attracting a stray mother dog to the cabin. She showed up at their door, drawn by the delicious aroma. “It all started when we were cooking bacon with the cabin door open,” recalled Trevor Jennings, one of the partygoers. “We were just enjoying breakfast when the dog showed up.”
Although they had originally intended to keep the gathering male-only, the men couldn’t resist the hungry dog. As they got closer, they realized she was in dire need of help. “We went out to pet her and noticed she was in bad shape,” Jennings explained. “You could see her ribs, and she was eager to eat any food we gave her.”
The charity group decided to treat their unexpected guest to a nice meal. They quickly discovered that the mother dog was not only hungry, but also extremely thirsty. The men speculated that the puppies must have been born some time ago, as the mother dog was no longer producing milk. “She had obviously had some puppies at some point, but she wasn’t producing milk when she found us, so we assumed the puppies were older,” Jennings noted. Curiosity got the better of the group when they noticed the mother dog repeatedly venturing into a particular area of the forest. They decided to follow her and soon discovered a hidden corner where a puppy’s head was poking out from a makeshift den. To their amazement, there were seven tiny puppies, almost newborn in appearance. It was clear that with seven small mouths to feed, the mother dog was struggling to find enough food.
Without hesitation, the men brought all the puppies back to the safety of the cabin. Leaving them in the woods was not an option. They carefully bathed the dogs, removing dirt and debris, and made them comfortable. Now the group faced the crucial decision of what to do next.
In a stroke of luck, each of the eight men decided to adopt one of the eight dogs. “We all live within about a five-mile radius and get together most weekends,” Jennings said. “We often take the dogs with us, so they can still see each other.” The decision ensured that the puppies and their mothers would continue to have regular contact and grow up together.
The mother dog, now named Annie, was adopted by Craddock’s grandparents, along with one of her puppies, now called Bear. Knox, Gunner, Annie, Brimmie, Finn, Rosie, Daisy and Bear are now enjoying life in loving homes, with the joy of being reunited with their siblings on a regular basis. The men are very proud of their new roles as pet owners and continue to support each other in caring for their furry friends.
The bachelor party took an unexpected turn, but it ended with each man returning home with a new, loyal companion.
