Broberg Retires After Training – BloodHorse

Karl Broberg, who saddled 4,900 winning horses in a 15-year career, has retired from training. Broberg made the announcement on Aug. 9 via the social media platform X.

The manager wrote that his longtime assistant Abel Ramirez will take over training operations while Broberg will focus on “breaking babies” at his private training facility. Broberg acquired the Toomey Training Center outside Vinton, La., in 2021.

Broberg noted that there were “no pending suspensions” that led to his decision to take time off from training.

An outspoken critic of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority, Broberg has raced his horses primarily in Louisiana and Texas over the past several years. He has trained winners of 100 races in 2024, earning $2,225,332 and winning his 13th training title at Delta Downhill in February. Broberg also won his 12th owner title at Delta Downs through End Zone Athletics, which he operates with Matt Johansen.

Broberg was the nation’s leading coach in wins from 2014 to 2019, posting a career-high of 548 wins in 2019. After becoming the 13th coach to reach the 4,000-win milestone in 2021, Broberg retired as the 10th-winningest coach of all time.
