Top Hospitals Ranked for AI Innovation

Everyone in healthcare is talking about artificial intelligence, and most healthcare organizations are doing something with it, even in pilot programs or small-scale use cases. But some hospitals and health systems are actually leading the way.

WHY IT MATTERS
This week, CB Insights launched its Hospital AI Readiness Index, a data-driven scorecard that tracks leading health systems on how innovative they are with their AI projects — and how effective they are at putting them to work for better clinical and operational processes and outcomes.

This index uses CB Insights data to evaluate hospitals based on two factors: innovation and execution.

For the former, the authors explored what they were doing to develop or buy new AI and automation tools and whether they had dedicated AI research labs. For the latter, they looked at AI implementations – where they were happening and what kind of real-world success they were generating.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, three major health systems top the list. According to CB Insights, Mayo Clinic is at the top, followed by Intermountain and Cleveland Clinic.

Mayo, for example, has been cited for filing more than 50 patents for AI-powered tools in cardiology, oncology, and other areas, and for investing in AI startups addressing a wide range of clinical and operational use cases.

Meanwhile, Intermountain and Cleveland Clinic were recognized, respectively, for Intermountain’s unique development of an automated clinical decision support system, and Cleveland Clinic’s many fruitful AI-focused business relationships, such as its “partnership with PathAI focused on leveraging pathology algorithms to enhance translational research and clinical care.”

Here’s the full list of the 25 health systems, according to CB Insights (note there’s a tie for #17), with links to some of our coverage of their AI work.

THE BIGGER TREND
Healthcare IT News has been reporting for years with in-depth interviews and case studies on how cutting-edge health systems have innovated their health care delivery with artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Recent collection pages feature articles that show how leading service organizations are pioneering their AI efforts and success stories where investments in IT and innovation yield clinical and financial returns on investment.

Interviewees include Dr. John Halamka, President of the Mayo Clinic Platform, on the potential of generative AI; Albert Marinez, Chief Analytics Officer at the Cleveland Clinic, offering advice on democratizing AI innovation and upskilling talent; and Craig Richardville, Chief Information and Digital Officer at Intermountain, with tips for evaluating and selecting vendors.

ON PROFILE
“We looked at the top private health systems in the United States (by number of hospitals) and ranked them based on their readiness to adapt to the rapidly evolving AI landscape across two key pillars: innovation and implementation,” CB Insights researchers said in releasing the new Hospital AI Readiness Index.

“The Innovation Score measures a health system’s track record of developing or acquiring new AI capabilities,” they explain. “The score is based on CB Insights data that includes patents, acquisitions, and deals. It also considers the presence of a dedicated AI research center.”

Meanwhile, the execution score “measures a health system’s ability to put AI-enabled products and services into clinical practice as well as deploy AI internally across business and back-office functions. This score is based on CB Insights data including business relationships, product media mentions, and earnings reports.”
