Perhaps the ultimate tribute to the Superquadro V2 comes in the form of the Ducati Panigale V2 Superquadro Final Edition, scheduled to hit the market in October 2024 as a 2025 model. Limited to just 555 units worldwide, the Panigale V2 Superquadro Final Edition is a tribute to the Superquadro engine line.

First appearing on the Ducati Panigale 1199 superbike in 2011, the Superquadro engine is a 90-degree V-twin with DOHC and four valves per cylinder. The Superquadro engine differs from the Desmoquattro V-twin that was popular in Ducati’s sportbike range at the time by using twin overhead camshafts driven by gears and chains, as opposed to timing belts.

Using a gear and chain combination provides precise coupling for the mechanical Desmodromic valve drive system, compared to timing belts which are prone to failure and require frequent replacement. The Superquadro name comes from its extra large square shape – four corners Italian for ‘square’ – the ratio between cylinder bore and piston stroke, at its peak it displaces 1,285cc with a cylinder bore of 116mm and a short piston stroke of 60.8mm, producing a claimed 194hp in the 1299 Panigale.

As for what engine might replace the Superquadro, that’s still unclear, and we suspect we’ll find out more when World Ducati Week 2024 takes place in Misano from July 26-28. Probably a twin-cylinder version of the Street or Granturismo V-four engine?

For the Superquadro Final Edition, Centro Stile Ducati, the company’s in-house design studio, and graphic design specialists Drudi Performance have collaborated to create the Superquadro Tribute livery for the Panigale V2. The livery consists of a main color scheme of white, red, black and grey.

These details follow the contours of the Panigale V2, while bold black graphics form the number “1” on the front cowl and fairing sides. The matte grey of the fuel tank contrasts with the colour on the fairing, complementing the saddle embroidered with the Italian emblem. Tricolor and embossed with Superquadro Final Edition graphics.

The Superquadro V-twin in this latest iteration produces 155 horsepower at 10,750 rpm and 104 Nm of torque at 9,000 rpm from 955 cc. The head, clutch and oil pan covers are made of magnesium, while the Vacural cast crankcase is fitted with pressed-aluminum cylinder liners with NikaSil coating on the bore.

Final Edition specific items include cast aluminium triple clamps with edition number and a model-specific dashboard animation on start-up. Carbon fibre components include silencer covers, front and rear mudguards, swingarm, chain guard, clutch cover, shock absorber protector.

The fuel tank cap and adjustable Rizoma footpegs are also machined from solid aluminium. For those who want to take the Panigale V2 Superquadro Final Edition to the track, a racing kit includes a number plate and wiper mirrors, while a GPS module for DDA data collection comes as standard.

Indicative of the Panigale V2’s sporty intentions, a lithium-ion battery is fitted as standard. Ohlins provides fully adjustable front and rear suspension and steering damper.
