Ineos Grenadier V8 won’t be a replacement for the LandCruiser 70 Series

Ineos used the Goodwood Festival of Speed as a stage to showcase a range of unique products Grenadierfrom V8-powered off-road versions, shorter wheelbase versions and even 4×4 versions designed for safari expeditions.

Earlier this month, Ineos revealed that it would launch its Arcane Works customisation division at Goodwood, which is expected to form the basis for a range of modified Grenadier cars.

Despite the big reveal, only one Arcane Works Grenadier was revealed, featuring a tweaked grille and silver trim accents, although no further details about the car were released.

The most eye-catching of the bunch, however, is the Grenadier V8 Prototype, which Ineos claims is a one-off – but that doesn’t stop us dreaming of a production version.

Built by a team of apprentice engineers from Magna, the company that builds the Grenadier for Ineos in France, this Station Wagon prototype replaces the BMW’s 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine with a General Motors 6.2-liter V8.

The LS V8 produces 317kW of power and 625Nm of torque – 117kW/175Nm more than the BMW petrol engine – and required redesigns to the engine mounts, engine electrical and electronics, water and oil cooling systems, exhaust manifold and rear silencer, driveshaft bearings, heat shields and centre console.

Currently, the Ineos Grenadier is available with just two engine options, a petrol and a diesel from BMW.

Next on the list of unique models is the ‘Shortermaster’, a Quartermaster pickup truck with a wheelbase cut by 305mm.

Measuring 2922mm between the axles, Ineos engineers pushed the rear seats forward to provide more space in the boot, which is integrated into the chassis.

Ineos also touted its partnership with German company LeTech, which has fitted raised chassis, portal axles and offset axles to both the Grenadier Station Wagon and Quartermaster pickup truck.

The new equipment, together with larger off-road tyres, increases ground clearance to 514mm (an increase of 250mm) while providing a wading depth of 1050mm.

According to the brand, the Grenadier equipped with a portal axle was put into service with the fire brigade of Mühlheim an der Ruhr.

If you thought Ineos was all about low-speed off-road vehicles, it has now expressed its intention to enter the 2025 World Rally Championship with a revamped, FIA-compliant Grenadier.

Built by Buzz Special Vehicles, the aforementioned 3.0-litre turbocharged engine has been boosted by 50kW and 100Nm to produce 260kW and 550Nm, as well as racing suspension, stiffer brakes, custom alloy wheels and a sports exhaust.

Inside, every amenity has been stripped out and replaced with a carbon roll cage, racing seats, door panels and roof vents.

Finally, the most eye-catching Grenadier was created by Ineos Kavango, whose Botswana division was responsible for the Safari-style conversion with the roof and pillars removed.

Equipped with three tiers of seating, Ineos says the vehicle offers “excellent visibility for all passengers; improved off-road protection thanks to specially designed front and side guards; and alloy wheels wrapped in all-terrain tyres to tackle the toughest safari terrain”.

Ineos Automotive CEO Lynn Calder did not reveal details of which prototypes would go into production, although he hinted that there would be more exciting products to come.

“The Grenadier chassis has proven incredibly versatile, so as we look to future products and limited editions, we want to continue to improve,” said Calder.

“As our new brand campaign states, the Grenadier is built to do more and over the next few years we will show everyone what that means.”
